I am afraid of trying Tymlos and other drugs due to side effects

Posted by mkav2023 @mkav2023, May 7, 2023

How do others handle the fear of side effects, as well as the very real side effects, from Tymlos and other osteoporosis drugs?

I am 68, physically active, and feel fine with no fracture history. When I began developing osteopenia years ago, I was put on Fosomax and large amounts of calcium and D for about five years with no positive results, and sure enough, my osteopenia became osteoporosis.

My doctor now is recommending Tymlos due to my worsening Dexascan scores (worse T-score is -3.3 spine, and other T-scores are in -3.0 range). I have read a great deal (pro and con) about Tymlos and its side effects, and I know that even if Tymlos helps, after two years on Tymlos, then I have to go on another drug. I believe the odds are I will encounter a drug sooner or later with serious side effects that will drastically hurt my quality of life.

Any advice from those of you who have been on Tymlos and other drugs with side effects is greatly appreciated. Thank you!

I too was uncertain about any of the drugs for osteoporosis. I’m 76 and spent my life working on health. I haven’t broken or fractured any bones but after DEX scan my Doctor put the fear of falling and breaking. I tried Prolia for 6 months but decided side effects were not worth the risk. Studied and decided on Tymlos. My endocrinologist said she’s gotten the best results. I stared at 8 clicks. Bad decision. Went to 4 then 6. I’m at 6 now. Take at bed time. It’s doable to get “ride my bike bones”. I also researched an estrogen patch called Menostar. Made to prevent osteoporosis. Persons taking Tymlos and estrogen are getting great results. Build bone and estrogen stabilizes growth. I don’t have breast cancer in my family. Further persons who stay on low dose estrogen don’t need reclast. This is in the beginning stages of trial but I think with monitoring I’m going for it.

I agree. Then they shouldn’t prescribe any osteo drugs if they don’t know anything about them.

And it takes very long to see specialists. Mine is 8 mths out. So what to do in meantime?!

I found this company in Edina MN called Hypercharge Health. I don't live in MN anymore, but frequently travel there to see mom and friends. They work with osteoporosis, plus many other ailments. So far out of all the on-line programs I've found, this one seems to be the most promising. I'm going to have a consult with them soon to find out more. They don't take insurance, but do take FSA & HSA, or you can submit out-of-network claim. They are doctors, not just any person doing a start-up company and trying to sell you supplements, etc. I'll update this post with further details.

FYI. I asked my PCP to order a P1NP & CTX and they didn't know that this is a blood test. They clearly shouldn't be care providers for osteoporosis!

@hazell what does the P1NP and CTX show? Are you taking TYMLOS?

@clandis3352 a woman can take estrogen at 75? I tried the pills at 45 and got cramps in my legs and went off estrogen immediately. I had no menopause symptoms. I knew nothing about it.

@alidamc I’m on very low dose of estrogen 12.5. Progesterone 2 weeks every 6 months. Check out Internet for results of estrogen and Tymlos. I didn’t have any symptoms when I went through menopause.

@hazell

Call often to check for cancellations but I bet you are already on their cancellation list.

@alidamc

There is a lot that has changed. I started last year at 77 and don't anticipate stopping.

@gently Hello,
Is following Tymlos with Evenity a common approach? I was thinking about doing the same but all recommendations are either prolia or reclast after tymlos and i don’t want to do either infusion.

@lynnsusan, I don't think it is common. But I've been reading individual reports of success with Evenity after Tymlos. It does make sense.
I feel the same about those infusions. But if you do take Evenity following what would you take after. Evenity bone is probably more stable after Tymlos than after any of the other medications but Evenity bone is lost fairly quickly. It primarily lays down modeled bone. that it, it lays bone down without the cement line that tightens the new bone's hold to the surface. We can't get the cement line without osteoclasts. Without the cement line the cells that resorb bone have that whole line of access to the bone.
