Chronic Abdominal Bloating and Pain
I am a relatively healthy person with a problem “bloated belly”. My belly gets bigger as the day goes on; doesn’t matter if I eat, drink only water, my belly still gets more bloated. The bloat continues up the abdomen into the midriff area…I have to loosen bra or put on a bigger one. This happens everyday. Pretty good in the morning.

First off, I’ve been gluten and dairy free for over ten years. But even with those restrictions, still had increasing problems, especially in the last few years. I was placed on a low FODMAP diet by my gastroenterologist a little over a year ago. Initially, I felt so much better. But now I am having more and more food intolerances show up. I am fairly certain I have leaky gut and will be working to correct that problem soon (just need to get past the holidays so that I can have the time to research, study and figure out what to do next).
What is a leaky gut! I hate to be so dumb but would like to know!
Web MD says “leaky gut” is a bit of a gray area. It is a gray area for traditional MDs but if you follow functional medicine docs or integrative medicine — it is a wide open subject. There is much discussion about the microbiome, etc.

I have a question about what you wrote. Since I have Crohn’s and according Dr Crohn’s the illness impacts the liver and I have issues with inflammation pain you touched several issues that I have. I was diagnosed with fatty liver, was almost diabetic type 2, suffer from constipation, GERD, swelling of ankles, and blooting. A year and a half ago I changed my diet to vegetables with protein, limited fruits since they cause problems also, and no flour products or sugars since I get immediate pain. You seem to have the background knowledge I would like to hear about. I was totally disappointed with Mayo Clinic since after one week of testing and locating my Crohn’s activity the Doctor prescribed Pentasa of which I am allergic to but she ignored my concern. Now the Mayo website recommends not to use Pentasa for Crohn’s. I showed her the Liver Support Factors supplement pills that I started taking and was very helpful but she ignored them. All I was asking why they were helping me. Now with my diet and supplement pills I put Crohn’s in remission, my diabetes was reversed, my GERD after 50 years completely stopped, my memory started to work, I can control the pain if I don’t eat items that I know I shouldn’t, but raw vegetables does impact the pain within one hour. I appreciate your knowledge and how you acquired it. Thank you for sharing.
Hi @cowboy1997,
As they say, there is nothing like a dumb question!
One of the early consequences of celiac disease is that the gut becomes permeable, allowing access of gluten molecules into the immune system. This ‘leakiness’ often lead to headaches, fatigue and other gastrointestinal issues.
You can read more about leaky gut on the Mayo Clinic Celiac blog, here: http://mayocl.in/2gg3Vpz

Thank you! Have you heard of anyone having Reflux Surgery redone after it came unwrapped? This happened to me in April when I had Cervical Spine Surgery! I noticed quickly lump in my throat and coughing came back that I had for 18 yrs B4 the surgery in 2008!
My 50 years acid stomach and reflux suddenly stopped when I stop eating bread, sugar, and carbohydrates. Just a lot of vegetables with protein, salads, and good leafs but dressing is olive oil and lemon. No processed dressing or foods, no can foods, no spicy foods, no soft drinks since they have preservatives. The liver is a sensitive and inteligente organ. If it is clean it produces super health. I know the liver controls acidity and reflux and proved it again in my case. In 1960 when my liver was treated I didn’t have acid stomach and reflux for 3 years. Just the liver supplements were not enough but once I changed my diet my entire health improved. The liver must love vegetables specially raw vegetables since I feel the effects within one hour.
Thanks for writing this post. It’s a miracle I found it and it helps me realize a lot of stern discipline I’ve got to stick to. Similar plate I share, I do best avoiding dairy/spicy/sugar/alcohol/gluten and no preservatives, canned or packaged foods. And limiting starches such as squash, plantains, potatos. Feel best cooking freshly grown veggies and some meat.
I believe with my minimum medical education the source of the problem is the liver. Since the supplements of shots I received in Italy in 1960 treated my liver and I was brand new for 3 years. I am applying the knowledge to understanding the liver and it’s behavior. I now know the liver loves vegetables specially raw. The liver controls GERD I tested it many times and it works each time. My logic is this:
If the liver loves raw vegetables and have the control of GERD than celery a raw vegetable should stop the acid stomach. I tested it over seven times and it worked each time. I have at least four heads of celery in my refrigerator. But since I switch to vegetables with protein my entire GERD stopped. I suffered over 50 years where I should have known from my treatment in 1960 cleaning the liver the body becomes super healthy. The liver for me is sensitive but an intelligent organ.
As the liver turns. A sensitive soap opera.
Thank you, this is great information. My sister in law is doing this exact thing, she is seeing an alternative doctor who had recommended removeing these items from her diet as she has Crohns. I have colitis but both cause inflammation. Bloating is my biggest issue.
Did you “give up” any other food groups?
