Hysterectomy what to expect afterwards?

Posted by cheriels @cheriels, Aug 29, 2022

Hi tomarrow I see the Doctor at Mayo Clinic Rochester and if I have a radical hysterectomy what are the steps to recovery and how long are you laid up and do you have minimal pain and how long is your hospital stay? Just so much going through my brain want to recover fast cause my Fiancé just found out he has Prostrate Cancer this past Friday and I want to be able to be there for him. He has to to decide what action he is going to do, but waiting for me first to see what is gonna happen? I don’t want him to wait to long he needs to get his cancer taken care of also. Thanks

Hi
Had a hysterectomy a few years ago after detecting ovarian cancer C. Not a big deal. Spent overnight at Mayo, Phoenix. Tests revealed there was no cancer remaining. Totally clean.
Now, oncologists are recommending hysterectomies even for women who do not have cancer.

@starko. I'm wondering why an oncologist would recommend a hysterectomy with no sign of cancer. Are you referring to the preventive measure when a woman has a genetic history of BRCA1, BRCA2 or Lynch Syndrome? Could you provide more information on what you are referring to?

I had my two scans yesterday and from what I gather my endometrioid cancer has not spread. This was what the the person who looked at it and was this person impression the last line on the scan result:
IMPRESSION:
Solitary FDG avid uterine biopsy-proven malignancy. No evidence of nodal or distant
metastatic disease.
Final

So am I correct the cancer has not spread? If this is correct another weight lifted off my shoulder hopefully caught it in early stage.

No one should have a hysterectomy unless they have cancer. Hysterectomy is major surgery and it is destructive.

Hi meet with my Doc. Jamie Bakunin-Gamez in Rochester yesterday and she went over my plan for me. I have a Pet Scan/ CT Scan Tuesday Sept. 6th and if she can rearrange some things will be having my Hysterectomy Sept 8th, if not my Hysterectomy will be done Sept 16th. She was very informative and answered all my questions I asked her. She told me not to worry I am in the best place for care of this Cancer, she told me all what she would be removing, had a diagram and explained everything. After talking to her, big weight was lifted off my shoulders. Mayo Rochester is the place to go.

So glad to hear you got scheduled for the first step- surgery. Indeed, it's a huge weight off when that's taken care off. Hoping all works out for the best. Mayo Clinic here in Jacksonville was my hospital and they will take care of you.❤

@cheriels I'm so glad you posted as I had been wondering about your appointment at Mayo.

It sounds like you are very reassured after your appointment with Dr Bakunin-Gamez. Your description of your first appointment is very much like mine was in 2019. While I arrived with questions, my doctor spent so much time explaining what she had read in my reports, her recommendations including a drawing, that I only had a few questions left.

What does your doctor recommend? Your PET/CT is coming up very soon and then your surgery. Are you relieved that this is all happening so quickly and that you have an action plan?

Gm. Yes I am. I have not heard back from the Doctor yet about having my surgery on Sept. 8th but that is ok, I am fine with it on the 16th! As originally scheduled, be glad to get all this removed and praying it has not spread and if it has take one day at a time and do what the Doctor prescribes. Once again thank you for your concern and how things are going with me and to know you have been in my position and going strong now! Hugs my Dear friend.
