Hypothyroidism: What medications work for you?

Posted by melbutts61 @melbutts61, 19 hours ago

I was curious if there are better medications out there for Hypothyroidism. I have been on Synthroid for 18 years and of course my lab work looks fine but I do not feel fine. Anybody else experiencing the same?

I only take 12.5 of Levothyroxine. It comes in 25 MCG tablet so have to cut in half. I think it is the generic from of Synthroid.

My lab test show that my brain is talking to my thyroid about my thyroid. But my PCP does to other test and they do not indicate anything abnormal. They keep looking if I have an autoimmune disease but none of those addtional test show it.

You do not mentioned your age. How is your fitness level, amount of exercise, etc.? How is your weight?.
All those can affect how you feel. What are your doctors telling you about your symptoms?

I'm 53. I'm overweight 237. I have degenerative disc disease (3 lumbar surgeries) 8 metal rods in back and 1 ACDF then a revision ADCF so I am active as much as I can be. I April I was diagnosed with Sarcoidosis. I have enlarged nodules in my throat and in my lungs and mediastinal.

As @jc76 said Levothyroxine is the generic version of Synthroid. Those are the only meds I know of to treat hypothyroidism. My husband had thyroid cancer and his thyroid was surgically removed. So now he takes Levothyroxine. His experience has been that sometimes the dose requires some adjusting by his doctor for him to “feel right”. Sometimes this happens even though the lab results look ok. There seems to be a lot of fine tuning involved.

Thank you @cehunt57. I will have to discuss this with my doctor today for f/up appointment.

I am going to mentioned an activity that many people in Del Webb use that have medical issues that prevent exercising.

It is water aerobics. I have degenrative disk disease also losing over an inch in height. I am 78 though. I have an old herniated disk in my back and overweight also (although working on it). I do water aerobics in our indoor pool and when closed for some reason do water aerobics at another outdoor that does water aerobics but not part of Del Webb.

In water aerobics you go into water and find a location your chest is in water. The water takes your weight off and you can do the exercise. We have one lady that has MS and has no use of her left leg and comes in a walker. We have others that have had knees replaced, hips, back suregeries with fusions, disk removed, etc.

I mentioned it only from the experience I have had with it providing a way to exercise with surgeries and medical conditons that prevent doing any exercise without being basically weightless in the water.

Synthroid is Levothyroxin and is T4.
There is also T3.
You need both and T4 usually converts to T3 but not always.
My T3 test showed I was low so my endocrinologist gave me T3 and cut back the dose on T4.
PC docs usually won’t prescribe T3 (cytomel) because it has to be micro dosed and it can have cardiac implications if you have cardiac risks.
I felt so much better after I started on both.

Have they tested your T 4 and 3? That’s a possible issue.

Like I said I felt so much better on both.

I see you said you have nodules in your throat. You probably have nodules on your Thyroid! Have you had a biopsy? My daughter had a complete Thyroidectomy 2 years ago due to thyroid cancer. She is doing find today, but that is something you should have checked. Good luck!
