Hypergammaglobulinemia: How long can a port stay in?

Posted by jenniferamartin @jenniferamartin, Feb 7 6:09pm

I was diagnosed in 2000 with primary immune deficiency syndrome.I’ve been receiving IVIG 40 grams every three weeks. I am 56 and have had a power port placed in 2012. I’m wondering how long a power port lasts? . It is still working fine! What are the indications to replace it?

Ports can last quite a while. It might need to be replaced if obstructed but that is rare with proper use and maintenance. Please reach out to your provider or nurse next visit. Write down all your questions so you don't forget. Health care staff are usually happy to educate.

@jenniferamartin, like @newwaldenguy said, implantable ports can last for years. They can handle up to 2,000 needle sticks before replacement becomes necessary.

Have you talked to your nurse about your concern with the port or what would indicate it needing to be replaced?
