Hurricane Milton

Posted by imallears @imallears, Oct 11 12:51pm

Hello to all my Florida friends here on Mayo. I am in the Tampa Bay Area that you have all seen in the eye of the cone from Milton on TV. We are personally fortunate to have sailed through this with no damage or even loss to power or internet. However , there are people not even a mile or two from us who are inundated with water, have no power and have had damage..many friends of mine who can’t even access a major road yet.
I know there are Florida Mayo Group posters here and some in the Tampa Bay area. Wishing you all the best no matter where you are and still dealing with Helene, the last Hurricane a couple of weeks ago.
Be safe and sound and hope any recovery is super fast. We are fortunate to have ideal cool sunny weather for a while to better deal with the clean up. But far too many have lost everything and are dealing with medical problems.

@imallears So glad that you have weathered the storms unscathed. The loss of life and devastation that I see on television are heartbreaking, and I can't even imagine the pain and suffering people are going through right now. I, too, wish the best for all of those in all of the states that have been adversely affected. They are in my thoughts and prayers, and I am hoping that they can get the help and resources that they need to recover and to get back to some semblance of normal life soon. ❤️

Glad you're safe, Mary.

I hope those around you will recover as quickly as possible. May God grant you comfort and peace as your communities struggle through the coming months.

Happy to hear you are fine. I have family and friends in Florida and fortunately they are all OK.
I lived in Bonita Springs for ten years and remember the stress of hurricane season and being glued to the weather reports. I evacuated for Irma and was without power, TV, Internet, air conditioning for more than a week. Fortunately I had someone to stay with who had not lost power. In Naples at the time of Irma, they did not have enough generators for all the sewage lifts, so everyone was told to not flush toilets as they were backed up. My friends used zip lock bags for their bathroom needs.

Thank you, Mary and I am so glad you fared well. Our house in Fort Myers did well too. However my son’s is in an historic district in downtown Ft. Myers and he and his wife and eight year old son were still working to restore it when Helene and then Milton hit. He now has to start over again. They have been out of their home already for two years and now…who knows. He and many others. It is so difficult to deal with and I am worried that insurance will become so expensive it is unaffordable and the chances of selling the properties that have flooded is not good. Many people are in a financial crisis over this. Hoping for a new start for them all.

Thank you and wow, Ft Myers, so happy to hear you did okay. I had not thought about trying to sell property in the future that was flooded . People will get to the point of having no insurance …there comes a limit. I know a few who are fed up with Florida and heading to the Midwest. My son in law said we are moving to Utah….jokingly and I replied that we would be hit with an unprecedented sand storm if we did. I have lived near water all my life even when we lived in New York and I don’t think that is going to change for us.

Milton is far reaching and anyone who denies the effects of climate change has blinkers on. Not getting political. I am thinking of the people who need medical devices and don’t have access to them or can’t get life saving medications…so much going on that we don’t even know about.

Thank you. Naples is beautiful. Yup, the weather, even in good times, is the first thing we want to see in the morning and last thing at night. We are experts in the 7 day forecast no matter the time of year. I had to turn our tv off…even my favorite news stations couldn’t stop talking about Milton.

Today, the doors are open and the AC is off. This is a great time of year in Florida. I am venturing out today but not too far….there are still too many roads inaccessible and I have 4 friends now that are still trapped by water even though they never lost power.

And like they tell you, water is dangerous. Where are your friends located?
Then there are the cute little things in the water !!!!
I remember one restaurant off of 41 that had a sign "Do Not Feed the Alligators"! Florida is great in the winter and I got used to the summers ....do not leave car out in afternoon, do everything in morning etc.
But my friends tell me it is getting hotter in the summer

I lived thru the Wolsey Canyon Fire in California that started on November 8,2018. The secret is good insurance to rebuild. I hope the insurance companies do not pull out of Florida like they did in California.
All a person can do in a bad situation is be forceful with the insurance adjusters.
I suggest many photos of EVERYTHING in your home, that includes opening up drawers and taking pictures of contents,. Nobody can remember every last detail and pictures help. Good luck to everyone that was impacted by those awful storms.

I think a huge thank you needs to go out to the keepers and vets of The Tampa Zoo who rode out the hurricanes protecting their animals. There are over 1000 species at the Z00, and not one was lost.
