Hi @scott519 The breathing passages are rather small. Any swelling in the back of the mouth or top of the throat can affect breathing. Also you have limited saliva which results in your airway sticking to itself and causing restrictions or the feeling of restrictions. Five months out you should be improving quicker than this. It wouldn't hurt to see an ENT for a quick check. This is just my lay-person's opinion. I had issues for months as well and saw an ENT, more to relieve my worries.
Sometimes it is just the feeling of restriction, the feeling something is stuck in the throat, the feeling something isn't right when all along everything is normal but the sensory feel isn't right. This is because the nerves there have suffered from the radiation. But in your case you are actually choking and must open your mouth to breath. This is why I recommend and ENT check.
We heal so slowly from radiation treatments. Are you getting better week to week or perhaps month to month?

Hello @scott519.
I agree with William and wanted to offer a few suggestions for the dryness to see how that helps you. I had a salivary gland removed with my neck dissection so permanently dry mouth. Running an ultrasonic cool mist humidifier, especially at night right by your bed, helps keep airways moistened. Saline nasal sprays like Ayr and Ocean also help nasal passages. When oral dryness is the problem Xylimelt tablets and Biotene sprays and gel and lozenges really work quite well. I have to use Xylimelt every night or sleep is further disrupted by tongue sticking to roof of mouth.
Your potential thrush needs to be treated as that gives you an annoying fuzzy feeling in your mouth and affects your taste buds that are trying to recover from the radiation. While my radiation was centered around my ear and facial nerve, I still had many oral side effects. Things started to improve a little at around 4 months post treatment but it took many more months for taste to return to its new normal. I agree with the advice to see your ENT as they may have more suggestions for living with these symptoms as healing occurs. Are you paying attention to your hydration also? Especially in winter, it is easy to ignore water intake and the slightest lean towards dehydration will affect your already dry respiratory passages. Keeping water and even electrolytes going every day will help.
