how to research a counselor in Georgia

Posted by rjtx @rjtx, Jan 21, 2022

I wonder if anyone could help me on online resource to research a licensed counselor in state of Georgia (specifically Atlanta)? I'm trying to find a good counselor/life coach for my son who is attending college. I know each state has online database to check if a particular counselor's disciplinary actions. but I can't find it for Georgia

@rjtx If you use Google, and type in "life coaches near Atlanta, GA" you will get a wide variety of sources to look at. As I researched a bit further, it seems there are no regulations in Georgia for specific certifications to be called a life coach. That said, you may be hard-pressed to track down disciplinary actions against a person with a life-coach title.

Does this help you at all?

Thank you for the reply. I just talked to a Counselor that I found from internet. What he said alarmed me. He said you have to be careful to seek counselling and differentiate between life coaching and counselling. He said some of treatment will stay on their file forever. which may prevent job search down the road. My son just needed some general counselling. there is no diagnosis of mental issue. we have this EAP (employee assistance program). he said even using that will result in a black mark which may prevent certain future employment. I'm confused about this as my son did talk to a counselor last year just to sort out feelings and issues. There was no diagnosis that he has mental issue. I wonder if anyone can clarify this?

@rjtx Oh, boy, I don't know about this!? Perhaps you could ask this counselor where his information is from, and how to know what is or isn't placed in records. In my experience, going through Employee Assistance Programs, it is confidential. While I never asked to see my Human Resource records, it hopefully was not in there, as my business is my business!

Perhaps there is a person involved with HR here who could clarify this for both of us?

Hi .... now this is just my understanding, so do check further. My understanding is seeking professional help for an emotional/mental problem should be treated no differently than if your son sought help for IBS or another typical physical disease. I'm not even sure when you apply for a job, they can even ask you about mental health anymore ..... I know they can ask if you have been convicted of some crimes .... but mental health? I seriously doubt it. In my years of working for a large company, a psychologist, a dental assistant, no one has ever asked me anything about mental health. Seems to me it takes more guts to recognize one needs it than not. Barb
