How to have quality of life with total Dysphasia?

Posted by gmac44 @gmac44, Mar 11 9:35am

Hello, I have a dear friend who has complete Dysphasia as in he cannot swallow, not even his own saliva. He and he wife are focusing on his recovery from sudden onset, maybe from an infection, for identifying root cause and for recovery. In the interim, he is miserable. Any advise, support groups or help for total Dysphasia? Thank you

gmac44, I am so sorry. That has to be awful. Praying right now for him.

Did he have COVID by chance? COVID can do a lot of crazy things to us.

Has he had an esophageal dilation by a Gastro doctor to stretch his esophagus? I am just giving you some thoughts on this.

Blessings....

Thank you. Uncertain about Covid, but no esophageal stretch has been recommended.

So sorry to hear your friend is struggling with Dysphagia. My partner has been dealing with it for the last 2 years, 8 years post cancer. He had a JPEG put in to ensure nutrition, had stretching done as well as vocal cord injections to close the gap. Unfortunately we are now pondering a functional laryngectomy since his muscle no longer can move his voice box to swallow without aspiration. He spits. A lot. I did see a few support groups when I googled. May be my next place as well. We're just trying to deal with it day by day. I hope your friend has a good SPL to help with strengthening exercises. They do help, not just as much as I had hoped. My thoughts are with your friend.

I have to have an endoscopy stretching every 3 yrs because my gerd causes narrowing of my esophagus and food like chicken and even water gets stuck. I do take medication for gerd. After each endoscopy I am good for 2.5-3 yrs. without any swallowing problems. Has your friend looked into medicine for possible gerd. He could have silent gerd if he’s not aware of any reflux which contributes to esophageal narrowing. If he hasn’t had an endoscopy I would encourage him to look into that.

Thank you. His appears to be virus caused and was very sudden. How to recover from the Dysphasia and live with profound effects is very challenging. Learning of others experience that might help him is appreciated.
