How to get an appointment with neurologist without having to wait mont

Posted by miserable @miserable, May 17, 2022

I have seen one neuro office, I saw an Arnp. He took time with me and was going to order more tests
The doctor came in and said I didn't need them. He was argumentative and dismissive, gave me gabapentin and then the office scheduled me for a 2 week phone follow up. When the Arnp called, he had no idea who I was. I called yesterday to see what I can do for the new increasing burning/pain. No one returned my call. Other than gabapentin and vitamins I'm taking advil. I've tried every office with in 50 miles to find another doctor... what can I do? Even mayo clinic has me on a wait list. They said probably 4 to 6 months. Frustrated in Florida! I will take any suggestions. Thank-you

@miserable, you sound really frustrated and at the end of your rope. You're also between a rock and hard place. Do you stick with the doctor you have where you're not getting the care you deserve or do you try to manage the increasing burning pain as you wait months to be seen elsewhere. Current circumstances have really put an unprecedented strain on the health care system.

I would encourage you to accept the appointment at Mayo Clinic and request to be put on the list for cancellations. Other members have shared that they were seen earlier than originally forecasted. I also wonder if you have considered the Pain Rehab program at Mayo Clinic?

Get an appt. Scheduled at the Mayo clinic. Call daily till you can get an appt. Even if it is four or six months out. Once you have an appt. call daily for cancellations or go to the Mayo clinic as a checker but you must have an appt scheduled to be a checker. Get there at 7 am when they open and register as a checker. If someone doesn't show you are there to fill their appt slot. Get there early because some days there are a list of people registered as checkers. You want to be number one on the checker list. Go daily till you get your appt.
Acupuncture and supplements helped me the most. Make sure you are under a doctor's care with routine blood tests when you are taking supplements.
Prayers for your healing.

Thank-you for your advice, I live 3 hours away from mayo. I can't go every day unfortunately. My neurologist told me to stop gabapentin last Wednesday due to swelling and only suggested aleeve. It's not helping, I can't even use a fork to eat. Worried about how I can get my daughter to school.
