How to get a colonoscopy scheduled promptly?

Posted by marimodesta @marimodesta, Dec 13, 2023

I failed the colorguard test. I was referred to have a cup colonoscopy, but was told it could be 2 to 3 months. I want to get it done now. so I can be treated. I don’t want to wait. I have had constipation. and gas as well as my stool has been different for the last 3-6 months. Any suggestions how to get colonoscopy done ASAP?

Do you have a gastroenterologist? Obviously some doc has to

Same here - 3 month wait after the positive Cologuard - this during COVID when routine exams such as colonoscopies were being delayed and before vaccinations were available. Back then, nobody wanted to be in a doctor's office.

I don't know if this can be done or how it can be done, but there are blood tests such as CEA that are used by oncologists to determine the activity of cancer and if chemo is working. While I don't think those can definitively rule out cancer, it can give you an idea of what's happening and urgency. I have no idea if your general practitioner can specify to do one, if insurance would pay for it and what an out of pocket cost would be.

I'm thinking to run your concerns by your physician and ask what he can and will do to handle your concerns.

Just for reference - from positive Cologuard results to colonoscopy was almost 13 weeks (Christmas and New Years breaks included) and my surgery was 5 weeks later, chemo was started about 7 weeks after surgery, if I recall correctly.

Her office did referral to my small city. I said NO - please send anywhere in the state. I wanted done ASAp. Her office followed through. Tomorrow will call to get scheduled. Thank you!

Near normal for someone's who is 70.

Surgery took the entire colon, they connected the small intestine to the rectum. Did 8 months of chemo. Just turned 2 years post end of chemo. Cancer is fine, still doing surveillance scans and blood work. I have a few remaining minor side effects from the chemo.

Thanks for asking.

I have my appmt for colonoscopy on Januarys 8th instead of 2-3 months away. I just noticed I have a tiny bit of blood in stool. I don’t have any pain or any discomfort but I am a little scared. I guess the very worse I will die soon or the best I can do whatever I have to and live for longer. Where do I find what happens after the colonoscopy?
Thank you for listening. I have only told 1 person.

Hey. Just as a point of information, there are a number of things that can cause blood to appear in your stool - that aren’t cancer. And the at home cologuard test itself has at best a 13% false positive. So try to enjoy Christmas and in January you will get clarity. I know it’s easy for me to say, but do try.

The doc who did the colonoscopy will brief you afterward whether he found any polyps or tumors that were suspicious, but you won’t know anything for sure until the pathology reports are returned. Which could be a few days.

All the best to you. Hoping the colonoscopy goes well and your subsequent biopsies are clean.
