How safe is Famotidine 40 mg ?
I was taking pain pills (many different types) for a muscle spasm in my back and got an "acid stomach" as a result. I was on a PPI for a month which worked and when I stopped, the acid stomach came back. I started taking Famotodine and after a few weeks, I was symptom-free!! I wonder if I could stop taking it now or do you think my acid stomach would come back? I have no side effects from the drug.

I was wondering what type of schedule did anyone use to wean off of Pepcid?
At the same time you wean off the medication you should do the lifestyle changes recommended for acid reflux (no coffee, chocolate, eat dinner early, raise head of bed, etc...), and have TUMS or Gaviscon Advance to take as needed
I was on protonix for 18 days for acid reflux and quit cold turkey as it was making me feel awful.
My doctor put me on 40 mg of famotidine twice daily and carafate 4 times a day to manage the acid rebound.
It's been 18 days now and the rebound is almost over.
This combo is working well for me. I've already started to cut back on the carafate and expect to stop it completely in one or two weeks.
If you come off make sure you do it exceedingly slow eg: 1/2 dose. For 2 weeks. Then 1/4 dose - 2weeks then every other day -2weeks. Note what foods if any bother you good luck
Hi, @malooga - Sorry to hear you felt awful while on the pantoprazole (Protonix).
You are saying you experienced rebound acid hypersecretion? If so, what symptoms did you experience with that? Does your doctor have any suggestions for tapering off the sucralfate (Carafte)?
That was my doctor's advice for getting off pantoprazole. She also said that if I have any problems during the weaning process, I should use either Tums or Gaviscon for relief. It's working for me. This stomach issue all started from taking assorted pain pills for a muscle spasm in my back, which is long gone now.
It was an unbearable burning in my stomach. Actually I had it before 5 years ago and had to wean off of it. I was on a ppi for months then and found out it was my gallbladder. The ppi meds never helped my symptoms. No blame to my health care folks. Just the way the cards fell. Anyway, it took months to finally stop. I took famotidine and sucralfate then as well.
This time I was prescribed ppi meds for acid reflux. I thought it would be helpful but for some reason it made me more I'll.
Now I'm only taking my morning dose of carafate.
Glad to pass on a success story for folks.
I beat this twice.
I got ahead of myself and need to taper off my carafate more slowly. I had a flare up this morning. A dose of carafate really helped. Seems I'm not quite over the rebound but I feel it's right around the corner.
I just got impatient and stopped taking it altogether this morning. Great lesson for me. I was down to two doses of carafate a day and feeling great.
I'm still taking famotidine 40 mg twice a day.
So people, stick to your tapering plan. Wish you all the best.
Famotadine is safe! I’ve been on it for a long time for different health issues. It works well. Have never had side effects with it. Have been able to go on and off of it it for years. No withdrawal or rebound heartburn which is awesome
What issues were you taking it for?
