How often do you check calcium and vitamin D levels?

I have an upcoming follow-up DEXA and I'm really curious to see if the bisphosphonate I have been taking for a couple of months now has done any difference.

I saw my doctor a couple of days ago and I forgot to ask him if I should check my calcium and vit D levels together with the DEXA, I will give him a call these days and ask him anyway.

But I'm curious how often do you check this, regardless if you are on meds or not.

Thank you in advance 🙂

@sophie93 Are you taking osteoporosis medication? I get Evenity injections so in order to monitor my calcium levels I have a blood draw that includes calcium every other month.

Prior to the Evenity injections my calcium was tested on an annual basis along with other tests including Vitamin D.

@sophie93 It’s a good question, then, to ask your prescribing doctor. My endocrinologist told me that I need these bimonthly blood tests to monitor calcium levels as Evenity “redirects” blood level calcium to build bone density. If my calcium blood level drops then I need to reschedule the monthly Evenity injections and contact my endocrinologist to see what he would want me to do. So far my calcium levels remain in the normal range.
