How much R-ALA to take?

Posted by aunttonipage @aunttonipage, Mar 5 10:06pm

I’ve heard 600 mg. a day, 1,800 mg. a day & etc.

Those of you that take it & have good results, how much do you take? And are you diabetic?

(I’ve already read tons of links & contradictory. I would like to hear from those that have had positive results.)

(85-year old male, 10 years with PN) I took 125 mg of ALA for 5 years and felt it minimized the intensity of my foot numbness. However, as I thought the numbness going up both legs, I increased the dose to 300 mg per day to some effect (stopped the numbness from going higher). I am also taking Super Vitamin B Complex and keeping my primary physician in the loop.

I have had PN in my feet and legs for 16 years. I was told by my neurologist that it stops at the knees. Small comfort...

I take 600 mg of ALA a day--at first I split it into morning and night at 300 but then discovered the recommendation to take all 600 in the evening and that seems to help. It didn't seem to work when I split the dosage. I have also started some Acetyl _L_ Carnitine so will see. However, the once-daily dose seems to be helping. I've had neuropathy for over 15 years. I take 200 mg of gabapentin but not convinced it helps. Seems like Gabapentin has too many side effects as it is not a targeted drug but instead affects the entire system. Many people get lethargic, gain weight and who knows what else. My mother ended up increasing it more and more so I thik it loses effectiveness over time and you have to increase it. She was taking 1200 mg daily ultimately. Id' give the once daily dose of ALA a try. It cured my neighbor! She had minor neuropathy and caught it early.

Good morning
I have been diagnosed with CIDP and the pain, numbness and tingling was terrible. I was started on gabapentin 900mg three times per day and it took all the pain away but I was very drowsy! I have lowered my dose to 300 mg in the morning and 900mg at bedtime. That works great for me. I also take ALA 200mg in morning and 400 mg in evening…. The majority of the time I am pain free during the day and at bedtime…. I have had to adjust my doses to finally have relief of my pain and not be to drowsy. Also I have found that medical doctors are not advocates of ALA. I have found that GOOGLE
scholar has a great deal of articles that are helpful.

There is a new drug approved for CIDP...check out Vvygart Pharma site. Wish I had that diagnosis but i have the other kind. This new drug is also for Myasthenia Gravis. Hytrullo. Fortunately for CIDP is an injection not an infusion.

I wonder that too. Gabapentin ,300 mg 3 times a day helps my neuropathy. I'm 83. It even gives me a happy little "high" about 20 minutes after taking it. I get a flash of "happy" and I think, "Oh, it's the gabapentin."

Raebaby, I am 82. Have been on cabamazepine for trigeminal neuralgia. Google says that after a month the liver becomes hepatic. Urine then goes black. Is
that true you think.

I have the stabbing pain in the back of my thigh. Doing thigh stretches several times a week stops it. Sitting too much tightens the muscles in the back of the thigh. We used to call that stabbing pain a “Charlie Horse.” It’s horrible!

William, Am 82 with trigeminal neuralgia. Prescribed cabamazepine. Stopped taking after finding that vitamin methylcobalamin (B12) works great. 6 little tablets dissolved under tongue daily. Cabamazepine makes liver haptic (hepatitis) very quickly.

I don't take cabamazepine, but I looked the drug up in several places just now and I didn't see it affecting the liver. It did say to watch for dark urine.

James, Yikes! I take a B-vitamin supplement, but not to that degree. I don't have any other answers. Try doing leg stretches. That may be the best help. I'm 77 and still very active. The electro-therapy is still proving to be good. My best!

Hi avalyn, I take 300mg a day of Gabapentin, I do not like taking any drugs if not necessary, I even shy away from Tylenol. Gabepentin can harm many organs, live, kidney just to name 2. I stopped taking it for 2 weeks and the burning in my thighs came back with a fury, took gabapentin 100mg and burning went away. I know now that I need to take it. Hoping that I do not have to increase dosage. Google it and see downside of gabapentin .

Avalyn, that drug will damage liver, hepatitis.
I found 10 tablets of meth cobalamin ( B12)
stopped my trigeminal neuralgia. Off course it is not a PATENTED big pharma medicine. Others include cayenne pepper and Turmeric with black pepper.

William, leg stretches won't work. My trigeminal neuralgia is between ear and front rt tooth..
