How many of you improved your osteoporosis without drug intervention?

Posted by deblb @deblb, Nov 28, 2024

I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis and had my first Prolia injection about a month ago. I have never had any health issues, I am 65 and have never been on medication. I was blind sided and of course didn't ask questions of my doctor and had no tests done other than the bone density scan only because it was recommended at my age. I am getting the Bone density report from my doctor, a GP, next week and I want to know what I should be asking her, should I request a referral to an endocrinologist?
I also want to know if anyone has stopped Prolia after 1 injection and is there a risk of rebound fractures? How many of you improved bone density with natural approaches. I am reading that bone density increases with Prolia because the 'dead' bone is not removed and new bone is deposited onto the old bone, not really improving bone quality. There is just so much information out there and hard to know what is fake and what is real.
Thanks for your help

He is a chiropractor who decided to study osteoporosis because of his own experience with it. I'd say he's pretty knowledgeable about it. He certainly knows more than some doctors I've spoken with.

That said, he wasn't always of help to me. He could not explain why I got osteoporosis to begin with, and he is overly reliant on bone markers which don't always tell the story. Also, he is *so* busy now that his day consists of one phone call after another, so I'm not sure he even remembers his patients, most of whom he has never even seen. He is retired from being a chiropractor.

I have a year of Tymlos left, and I doubt I will need to consult with him later on. My endo seems to know what options are next.

Interesting! So he’s not an MD or specialist. So much disinformation out there!

My daughter-in-law is an Endo And she says SOME things in his book are sound and somethings not. She suggests bonedensityandosteoporosis.org. I believe McCormick is not an MD?

When my doctor first recommended Prolia in 2022, I found this website thinking it was patient/consumer centered/driven and could help me evaluate the recommendation. As always, I checked from where the funding came and saw Amgen as a main contributor. That ended that particular search but then I found Mayo Connect, which has been the very best forum for my purposes.

I tried a couple of weeks ago to verify my previous search about Amgen involvement. Could not find any info about funding sources but then the website did not make it easy and had better things to do with my time.

I don’t know which to respond to hear, but I want to say that when I started my regiment on TYMLOS last spring summer I had butt loads of questions and everyone here was so supportive and help me get access to information. It is overwhelming because we are individuals and we have an individual path. I can say for myself, I believe in natural approaches, but when it came to the bone deterioration, I saw the natural approaches being useless and ineffective. I have a strong science background, and it seems pretty clear from where I sit that my degenerative condition comes from being post menopausal And hereditary. I am also of slight frame. I had a few surgeries which also let me know that my bones were deteriorating and not what the DEXA scan said. I restarted bioidentical HRT and my bone doctor wouldn’t help me with it so I did it through another doctor and I’m thrilled I did. After six months, I am read returning to a hormone doctor within my medical system in fact next week, so I am hoping to bring all of my HRT into the system so it will be covered by Medicare. I think the Mayo Clinic forum here has a wealth of information. It’s just super overwhelming when you come to begin, dissecting it for the first time look back through the histories of all the threads you can find related to the bone medication’s and osteoporosis. Good luck.

I was on HRT for eight years and still had osteopenia. I was much younger in my 50s. I am now 82 then they put me on vagifem and I ended up with a pre-cancerous condition of the uterus requiring hysterectomy. I then developed bilateral breast cancer. I’m using the two studies on strontium citrate as supplement guides- one done in Canada the other one done in United States. At one point, I had osteoporosis while being on long-term steroids, and reversed it to osteopenia; I’m on prednisone such a long time for an auto immune situation. My Endo wants to be on bone meds, even though I’m not technically osteoporosis now. I had stopped the strontium when I developed atrial fibrillation because I didn’t want to muddy the picture. I felt so ill after the second Prolia shot - got shingles 13 days after it- I resumed taking strontium citrate 340mg now, dietary calcium, vitamin D, 2000, magnesium citrate 200 mg a day. Even though I didn’t have the strength to exercise because of my condition, I still improved my bone density from osteoporosis to osteopenia.

Karen, I am 80. I have been on vaginal estradiol cream for over 7 years. I relate to you. My orthopedic ordered a MRI on my hip and the radiologist saw a problem with my uterus. I had to have a biopsy of my uterus over 3 weeks ago and it was painful to say the least. I wasn't sedated but only some nitrous oxide. Dr. had to slice my uterus and boy did that hurt! I did receive my test result back and fortunately, no cancer. My gyn told me I could start using the vaginal cream again after the test results came back. I am told that the vaginal estradiol is safe but now I am afraid to use it at all! The past weeks were very long to get through with the waiting. I am afraid to use it again as if there is a next time, the test may not be negative. The estradiol cream helps me sleep however so I am tempted to use it. I am a poor sleeper. I hope you are on your feet with healing from the surgery. You have been through too much!

Have you had any adverse side effects on Tymlos? And did you titrate up to the full dose? Thanks so much. Grateful that you posted here. Susan J.

I am not recovering from surgery at the moment.
I was using VAGIFEM and I attribute the problem of post menopausal bleeding to that. So I stopped using it. ESTRIOL is a different form of estrogen that doesn’t affect the breasts. I ended up needing a hysterectomy. Anyway the estriol can be bought online in formulations provided they are USP meaning United States pharmacopeia. I am 82 now.

Karen, I get the Estradiol prescriptions from my GYN. I I guess I just don't know enough about these types of medicines. I was under the impression and never researched differences of Vagifem and Estradiol cream. Many years ago I tried Vagifem but had very bad headaches So stopped it. I suppose my fear is that since the Estradiol creams is inserted vaginally that it could still effect the uterus. Please for give my lack of knowledge about this and I appreciate you responding to me.
