How long do side effects last - Evenity (leg numbness, tingling, weak)

Posted by dang1956 @dang1956, Jul 25 11:24am

My wife started Evenity a few months ago. The first injection was fine. She had a significant reaction to the second injection - joint swelling and a lot of pain. She was treated largely with steroids and the pain has subsided (it has been about 4 weaks). However, she still has numbess, tingling and weakness in one of her legs. We have been to a number of doctors and, most recently, she had a nerve conduction study. That study found no damage. Has anyone had an experience like this with Evenity and, if so, did the symptoms resolve (and, how long did it take).
Thanks.

I hate to sound negative but I had similar side effects with Prolia and Alendronate. It has not gone away for the past 6 mos.

I have been on Evenity for 4 and 1/2 months. About two weeks after the third shot, I started having increased pain in my right leg. I do have some stenosis on that side--where the nerve exits my spinal column, but it seems possible that the pain and weakness in my right leg may be exacerbated by the Evenity. I have tried discussing this with my doctors, but I am not satisfied with their responses. I will be getting a steroid shot on Monday and will see if this helps. If the pain returns after my next Evenity shot, I will attribute it to the drug and consider taking another osteoporosis medication. I am hoping that I will be able to continue taking Evenity since it does seem to be working as it should--building bone.

I just had my 12th Evenity injection two weeks ago. I’ve been dealing with right leg pain for a month now. It starts in my lower back, down the side of my thigh to my knee. The pain is a severe burning sensation. There are some days that I need. Crutches to walk. I’m on a 12-hour 15 mg release morphine tablet twice a day. I take oxycodone for the breakthrough pain. The inside of my leg, from the top of the thigh to my knee, is numb and has been for several weeks. I have failed lumbar back surgery, so I thought that what was giving me the leg problem was. My neurosurgeon ordered an MRI with contrast. It showed at L4 a condition called arachnoiditis, which is a painful disease that has no cure. However, now I’m wondering if it could be related to Evenity. Is your wife’s pain a stabbing pain or a burning feeling? . I hope my information helps. Prayers are being said for your wife and all who are suffering.

I have had three shots and have some pain in my hips, legs, and arms which is exacerbated by immobility. It’s worse at night and I am stiff in the morning. This gradually goes away during the day. I have started taking Tylenol before bedtime which helps a bit.

I also strive to be active during the day with exercise, walking, and stretching and to stay well hydrated.

I think that because Evenity and other anabolic medications are acting on our bone metabolism and promoting bone growth over a short period, they can cause some discomfort in some of us.

Many have no side effects at all and others have terrible issues which cause them to stop the medication. For me, the side effects of Evenity, though uncomfortable, are tolerable at the moment to prevent another fracture. I hope that continues.

Please keep us updated as my doctor just suggested that I begin treatment with this newish drug. I'd like more information on realistic expectations of side effects.

I'm 66 and lead a very active lifestyle...kayaking, yoga, walking and weight training. Can I expect to slow down as the joint pain progresses?

I have had severe pain starting on 12th shot in February. It has only gotten worse and have been off it since February , 5 months. Have continue exercises that help but pain returns within an hr. My OA has also increased in hands shoulders and neck. My left femur xray showed an increase calification with possible femur injury on upper outer femur. No fx but weakness and possible injury. I have had no falls etc so my ortho Dr thinks it from Evenity. Anyway it is a waiting game to see if pain resolves but it has not. I am using a cane but may have to go to a walker as I am unsteady. Prayers we get better. I can not do any gardening, grocery shopping causes pain and I am in bed for the next day or 2. Before tx I was active doing gardening unpacking decorating walking etc. My life is destroyed. Prayers for all of us.

I’d been on Prolia for osteoporosis for quite a while and after a discussion with my rheumatologist, he thought it would be good to switch Evenity for a year, then I could go back onto Prolia. (Prolia was the only med I’d taken for osteoporosis that showed a bit of improvement rather than just maintaining status quo. Also, it is NOT a bisphosphonate like the other osteoporosis drugs; it is a monoclonal antibody, and it inhibits the formation of cells that break down bone, which then helps strengthen bones and reduce risk of fractures. I never had any side effects when I was on Prolia.)
After having 5 doses of the Evenity, certain symptoms that appeared after the first couple of doses, continued to worsen. It’s kind of hard to say for certain what causes the symptoms since Psoriatic Arthritis can cause them as well, but here they are: greater fatigue; worsened neck pain, joint pain, and leg weakness.
According to online research, the side effects of Evenity may take months to decline. I am not sorry that I stopped the Evenity because beyond the side effects mentioned, I had a deep feeling that it was very wrong for me. I hope to be able to restart Prolia by next month when I see my rheumatologist again.
It’s so hard to know sometimes what drugs will help us without making us worse!

I have not slowed down. I continue to exercise every day and I think it helps. It’s tempting to slow down but I find I feel better and have less pain if I get up and do my regular exercise routine in the morning.
