How long after catheter removal did you start Kegels?
My catheter was taken out today. Buut I was advised to wsit one week before starting Kegels. Not only that. They also told me to just let it flow for one week and not trying to hold it back. Is that normal?

I'm not a medical professional and really don't know, but I'd suggest just following your care teams instructions as they know your situation best. Plus, a extra week really isn't very long. I don't know but suspect they just don't want you putting those stitches, muscles and tissue under stress until things have had time to heal up a bit more. I'm a year since RARP and I honestly don't remember exactly how long my care team had me wait before starting Kegals, but I highly doubt I restarted Kegels or tried to stop my flow within the first week of the catheter coming out. What I do know is I strictly followed my care teams instructions and recovery was (thankfully) fairly uneventful. Don't get me wrong; I did have to adapt to a new normal. But so far every month has been better than the last and at this point I consider myself pretty much back to normal (except for mild ED that is recovering slowly). How are you doing since the catheter came out? Best wishes.
They have just cut thru your ureter and reattached it. One function of the catheter is to keep the ureter open so the stitches can heal. This would not be a good time to put any stress on the ureter. I would follow their instructions in the time frame after the catheter comes out. (about a week). I think mine were 30 days of no strenuous activity. I was feeling really good at about 2 weeks and started a little more activity. I started bleeding and decided I better wait the 30 days.
Thanks! I had had tbe cathether for teo weeks. The reason they gave me is to let it rest for one week. I feel fine otherwise, except for the incontinence.
Hopefully that comes back. I am 5 yrs out and still incontinent.
As suggested work with your Dr. etc on when you can start Kegels. I had a compression bandage on for 2 weeks after my RARP and was taking twice daily laxatives for 10 days after my RARP. I started my PT/Kegels one full month after my RARP.
I had RARP in first week of April this year and catheter for 10 days post. I had been doing kegels prior to the surgery and restarted once the catheter came out but slowly as per the team. What I did find was that I did have discomfort for a good couple of weeks around my anus. PT said that was normal because the muscles are so week, Have seen the PT for 4 sessions and been given a home plan which seems to be helping. Discomfort is gone and core strength is much much better. Added light weight training back in as well. Still incontinent but living life. As with anything each person is different and I would defer to care team.
Thank you. And sorry to hear about your situation. Did you consider a sling or an artificial sphincter?
I was told to give it two weeks before kegels again.
I'm sorry about the incontinence, I do hope it clears up quickly but it can take a little time until that happens.
Thanks! I did not expect it to be total incontinence. It’s scary.
Congratulations on catheter removal! I got mine out five days ago. Follow your team's recommendations. They don't want you to strain the new plumbing. I'm slowly doing kegels while peeing as Dr. Walsh mentioned in his book. But I also spent two months doing them before hand and can tell it made a difference.
I did have a slight setback with a bladder infection. Was leaking like a hose for a day while the bladder was screaming at me. Antibiotic and Azo make me feel wonderful and I'm peeing like a teenager again.
Hang in there...it seems to be two steps forward and one step back on the road to recovery.
