How do you deal with aging?

Posted by prcrowe @prcrowe, Jan 1 10:04pm

How do you emotionally handle aging and knowing that you only have a limited number of years left in your life? I'm turning 80 years old in 5 months, am in quite good health, work fulltime, and am incredibly grateful for the life I have. But, I find myself obsessed with the thought that I only have "x" amount of years left in my life. I've never figured out how to live one day at a time. Any suggestions from those of you around my age or older would be SO appreciated! (I'm "kind of" spiritual, but not really religious so that's not something that seems to help with my fear.)

This week we ...
Had dinner with my sister and brother-in-law to celebrate his retirement...
connected with friends of over 40 year's duration for a seven hour celebration of friendship - chats, dinner, more talk, and plans for later this summer...
Hosted a grandkids plus day with their second cousins... playtime, cookout ant general hilarity...
Grouped our doctors' and other appointments and went together, making optional stops along the way...
Planned a week-long camping trip with our young grands, planning needs and wants...
Spent the afternoon making a needed repair to the backyard pond, involving much mud, belly crawling, and luck...

Life is never boring if you refuse to sit back and watch!

@sueinmn | Love the spirit & vitality!
A few minutes ago I read about a 100 year old D. Day veteran returning to France for the 80th anniversary who got married in France today.

@edsutton | Anything Hazel (or you) would add?
BTW we have a Klee Kai who does the same thing when we open the door to the backyard as though he is going out for the first time into uncharted territory!

Let's see...

My wife and I went to see an old friend who lives about 2 hours away. we stayed at a motel up there and had fun scouting around, checking out a new lake. (See attached photo.) Plus, it was great seeing my old friend. We were co-workers 30+ years ago and became very close. I call her "the little sister I never had".

My big surprise this past week is that I found out I am a top-10 finalist for SilverSneakers' "Member of the Year". I'm not exactly sure why I was nominated, let alone selected, but if it gives me an opportunity to help others, that's great.

PharmaMan- Hazel and I are reading a new book: "The secret History of Kindness - Learning from how Dogs Learn" by Melissa Holbrook Pierson. It's a book about positive reinforcement, operant conditioning and clicker training - all stuff I thought I know pretty well, but somehow this book opens us to a much finer level of communication. And on our walks Hazel is managing to get past the deer herd and certain difficult dogs without losing it. Whew! [Some of our neighbors feed the deer and we are overpopulated with deer.]
They say you can't teach an old man new tricks, but Hazel will tell you otherwise.

@edsutton A quote: “When the student is ready, a teacher appears”.
Sounds as though Hazel has been a source of some learning. Anything you would care to share?

Love that you drove 2 hours to see a friend entailing an overnight stay — says a lot about how you value relationships!

I will have to pick a couple of people I have valued & make a trip to visit them — starting with a reunion of 25 or so company alums (a first for me).

Have no knowledge of Silver Sneakers — is it fun?

Thank you. I don't have a lot of friends, so I take care of those I do have.

SilverSneakers is a national fitness/wellness organization that is made available to members of certain Medicare Advantage plans. (I got early eligibility because of my disability.)

They offer online and in-person exercise and other classes. I have a great time taking online classes. There's a wide variety of topics, from stretching to cooking, and the instructors are top-notch.

Just live day to day, and try not to think of your time left.
My dad always said he would not live past 81 or 82, but he was going strong at over 100.
One never knows.

Everyone and @funcountess:

Everyone:

Request you to share please: If you had to pick just one (only one) single item that has added to a zestful or healthful or fun life either for you or someone you know, what would be that single one thing?

@funcountess : What is the single one attribute of any kind (mental, physical, nutritional, a habit etc. etc.), that explains your Dad crossing over 100 despite notwithstanding the genetic prediction for a shortened life span?
