I need fillings, a dentist started one but left a hole , another dentist did the rest, but wow Ive not had such bad tmj, the pain ....., couldnt open my mouth much it still hurts days later, the feeling in the ears of being blocked etc. I need more fillings but fear going back , I cant open my mouth that wide. and if they dont do the fillings properly..........

Hi tisme,
That's terrible about your dental problems! I feel so bad for you! I would find a new dentist if I were you. Do some research and read reviews. Yelp, Next Door and Google might be good places to find a local dentist for you. You shouldn't be having all of these problems that you are having. Is there a Dental School near you? That also might be a good place to look since they have to teach it and teach it correctly.

One thing that will help with the pain is Listerine, the original flavor; the new flavors don't work well. Just hold the Listerine in your mouth on the area that hurts. It'll sting a little bit but it takes the pain away for a while. You may have to use it several times. Don't swallow the Listerine; although it won't hurt you if you do swallow it but it's best to just spit it out. You can get the Listerine from Amazon.

I understand about dental problems. I was in the dentist's office from the time I was 6. Luckily I got dentures when I was 16 and that was exactly what I needed. Dentures not implants. Implants cause a whole lot of problems and are painful from what I've read.

I hope you can find a really good dentist. Ask God for help. He made your teeth and he can fix them! I'll say a prayer for you also.
I wish you the best,
PML

I am afraid that I am being made to suffer for complaining about being ripped off by a previous dentist , ( they all talk to each other , like drs do ).

@tisme I sincerely doubt they are talking about you. They just don't have time for that. My daughter had the same dental disaster as you. She could not open her mouth all the way and could not eat properly either. It took a long time to recover from this too. She stopped going to the dentist completely ! Her mouth muscles just needed to heal. Maybe put your dental stuff on hold for a while. Then go to a new dentist who has very good ratings on line. I use Yelp a lot for this.

now I am left with a painful tooth all the time, when I bite and when I dont I cant go anywhere it seems. you get ripped off you complain and your the criminal. I wont be going for any more dental treatment , no point, I dont want to risk more damage. will have to risk not doing it.

Random comment: both my dentist and endodontist use bite blocks. I don't have to hold my mouth open. I open my mouth and they put this spongy thing on the side opposite from where they are working that I bite on and it holds my mouth open. Even did this when working on top back tooth.

I cant get help from any dentist now , since I reported one for ripping me off she has put the word out ( lies no doubt) to all the other dentists. Cant get legal help because I cant afford it, one dentist filled a tooth ( long story ) before I knew what was going on , had pain ever since.

The temporomandibular joint combines a hinge action with sliding motions. The parts of the bones that work together in the joint are covered with cartilage and are separated by a small shock-absorbing disk. This disk usually keeps the movement smooth. In my case the disk is moving out of alignment which causes the clicking and pain. It can also be caused by:

Sprain or strain in the ligaments or soft tissues
Arthritis damage in the joint's cartilage
Impact that damages the joint

I went to the dentist yesterday and he explained what's happening - he told me to stick to soft foods and to avoid opening my mouth very wide (as in a yawn), and to take pain relievers as necessary. I have a mouth guard for sleeping and he said mine was in bad shape from grinding my teeth so he took impressions to make a new one ($$$). He also prescribed muscle relaxants if it gets bad. Surgery is the last option, and there are many things to try before resorting to that (there are PTs who work with TMJ patients too). He said it typically passes with time and not eating crunchy foods and thick sandwiches. Hoping for the best for all sufferers.
