How did you prepare for chemo?

Posted by brighterdays @brighterdays, Apr 11, 2023

Hello all! Starting TC chemo in a few days. How did it go for you? How did you prepare for it? What are some things you would have done to make it easier and more comfortable?

My husband usually brought me. Because of the drugs I got I was not fit to drive.
There was a social worker on the floor who used to stop and talk to people while they had infusions- she never came to me and I regret not asking for a chat. To vent anxiety I wouldn’t want to tell anyone in the family.

My hairdresser who also sells wigs and other hair loss necessities told me not to shave my head but to get a buzz cut when hair started to fall out. She also sold me a baseball cap with hair attached which I lived in.
It looked remarkably like my own hair and was so quick and easy to put on and take off. Many hospitals/clinics provide blankets or take your own. I packed a water bottle, tablet, book and knitting. I brought a completed knitted dishcloth to every appointment to gift the nurse attending me that day. (A bribe for special treatment that may have worked?) Make friends with your nurse and do tell them of any concerns. Mine were in touch with my doctor's office and got me prescriptions without my having to do a thing. They have great advice. When my nose hair fell out (every hair on my body went), I started to get bloody snot. The nurse advised Vaseline be applied (I swabbed with a q tip). My doctor's oncology nurse gave me a lot of information beforehand, but the infusion nurses are on the battlefield and are the experts. Use them. Keeping a journal is something I wish I had been more diligent about. Stay as active as possible on your good days. Most importantly, be kind to yourself.

1. Positive thinking. I visualized the chemo chasing the cancer and and killing it.
2. A blanket
3. Something to do. I crocheted or knit, read, eat if you can.
4. My husband came with me or another family member or friend they entertained me.
5. Sleep!

I decided to treat chemo like an event. One time dressed like Wonder Woman, one time the ultimate football fan (Steelers) complete with Steelers recliner cover, for my last chemo I wore a pink graduation gown and cap. I tried to make each session something to look forward to, something that would help me “win the battle”

Thank you for the kind replies! To be clear, everything was not rainbows and unicorns after chemo sessions, but to focus on how to be able to prepare for next chemo was essential. Find what brings you joy and tap in to that
