Hospitalized for treatment
Has anyone been hospitalized for initial treatment of NTM? I am 78 with bronch and m abscessus and comorbidities. Ox sat is good. No supplemental oxygen. Just wondering how common hospitalization is and if anyone has experience with it.

I have been hospitalized twice, once for two nights and the other for eight, So I could be stabilized with IV steroids. It is a real pain, but once I got out of the hospital, I felt marginally better, but more importantly, my downward slide stopped. It then took a few months of trying different medication’s before we found what worked and I started getting better. There is no magic bullet for this thing, but at least in my case, the hospitalizations ended a crisis
In case I wasn't clear I am not talking about exacerbations but rather beginning initial IV treatment for NTM.
Glad you are on the mend. Thanks for responding.
First, I don’t have MAC and haven’t experienced the meds. Second, I’ve been out of hospital nursing for a while and things might have changed. That said, with good saturations, unless you have significant comorbidities, I’d be surprised if you’d meet criteria for a regular hospital stay if you’re in the States. In past, they could sometimes get you in on an overnight observation status with some criteria.
Is your doc wanting you to stay overnight?
Seeing ID doc in a few hours. I have m abscessus. Just looking at possibilities. The long wait for treatment has been hard. I am in Canada BTW.
Let us know what he says. Wishing you the best of luck.
Getting a PICC line. Drugs to be decided as she still doesn't have results of susceptibility tests. More waiting. Sigh. But thanks for the good wishes.
