Hives and itching after gallbladder surgery

Posted by msskypooh @msskypooh, Nov 21, 2020

I'm a 51 year old female who had her gallbladder out ten days ago. A couple of days after surgery I developed hives on my abdomen from under my breast, on my sides down to my groin area. Benadryl isn't working, and I don't seem to be affected by food, or the material in my clothes. I've lost a lot of sleep and am looking for some relief. I've never experienced anything like this. Has anyone else had issues with severe hives after gallbladder surgery?

jthaw,

It is really important that you call your doctor/ surgeon.

I had a similar rash post op, and it was an allergic reaction to the pain killer that I was given. Mine appeared almost immediately, unlike what other members have mentioned here.
Take care and good luck!

Could it be shingles? I developed insomnia after gallbladder surgery. It took my body 3 months to adjust not having a gallbladder. I didn't have an appetite during 3 mos.

I will continue looking for answers. The last incision is getting worse still and it has now been 2 full weeks tonight.
Did yours look anything like this?

Hi salva,

If you are having an allergic reaction to a medication, you need to contact your doctor.

I'm pretty sure that the only way to get rid of an allergic reaction hive is to stop taking the medicine that's giving you it.

I think it can be dangerous to continue taking that medication when it gives you a rash. Like, something worse will happen if you keep taking it.

Good luck!

HI Salva,
Allergy to the glue-- OMG. What next? [That last bit I wrote -- I meant it to sound like sympathy... sometimes it's hard to get the right tone in these short messages ] My sympathy & hope it clears up soon!

I had gallbladder surgery 9 days ago and I’ve been suffering with hives all over my stomach and under my breasts. The surgeon told me to use Benadryl cream and the pill and that didn’t work. The pill put me to sleep and when I woke up the itching was still there. I called back to complain. I started using hydrocortisone and that didn’t work. Then the surgeon prescribed hydroxide hci. I’ve only taken a couple of pills but so far no relief. This is horrible! It’s bad enough that I have to get through the pain of the healing from surgery but I have to itch like crazy all day. Does anyone have any advice?

@tpenton, From time to time I have had intense itching on my legs. My dermatologist prescribed Triamcinolone Acetonide Cream 0.1%. This has helped me and I hope it will help you. You have been through so much already. With all good wishes, @joybring1.
