Hello @joaneed, Welcome to Connect. I think that's probably a question to discuss with your doctor or surgeon. Here is some information on the topic that might be helpful.

"Patients on steroids who present for surgery may be at increased risk of complications because of: The adrenal suppression caused by steroid therapy. This often poses the greatest risk and deserves particular attention. It is important for patients to be educated about the risk."

Have you talked to your doctor about being on prednisone while getting a hip replacement?

I was 56 years old and told my surgeon I was on 8 mg prednisone (and had been on prednisone for a year for PMR), and he was fine with going forward with the hip replacement. Everything went fine for me.

I had a hip replacement while on 2 mg. of prednisone and recovered very quickly, but I attribute that to my exercise routine. I was in very good shape prior to surgery. Hope this helps.

I had a total hip replacement 3 weeks ago on 10 mg prednisone. I have been on prednisone almost 3 years and have adrenal insufficiency. I was given multiple doses of IV steroids during and after surgery. After ten days in the hospital I went home. I am almost 77 years old. I have home PT and a nurse checks me once a week. Recovery is going well just muscle pain now great pain relief with the new hip. Steroids complicated my recovery somewhat but it was manageable and I am glad I had the surgery. Best wishes for your surgery and recovery.
