Hip replacement and Prolia
I am 67 years old with severe osteoarthritis in my right hip. I have been having mild to moderate pain for a few years now. I am fairly active and have done physical therapy a year and a half ago and currently. I've seen a surgeon who said I'm a good candidate and I was considering having it done in October as we have trips in August and September. I have been taking Prolia for osteoporosis for several years and my next injection is scheduled for September 15 (it's administered every 6 months). When I saw my endocrinologist today, she recommended waiting to have surgery 3 months after the Prolia injection. This means waiting until January (because I don't really want to have surgery in December) which leaves me really disappointed. I'm wondering if anyone has been in a similar situation. Thanks.

Have you thought about postponing your Prolia injection til after hip replacement? Maybe your endocrinologist could answer if there is a time frame for that?
I had a total hip replacement last December at age 61. I am also very active but have osteoporosis. I had a Reclast infusion the year before so did not have to deal with any osteoporosis med interaction. I did have to cancel my normal teeth cleaning and wait 3 months post surgery. Recovery from THR was relatively easy. Best of luck to you!

Thanks for your reply.
Postponing the Prolia isn't advised. I actually received a message from my doctor today offering me an alternative plan. She suggested transitioning off of the Prolia and replacing it with an oral drug like Fosamax or Boniva. So, more info to wade through in order to make a decision!
And, as a retired dental hygienist I know about postponing dental cleanings. Most surgeons want you taking antibiotics prior to dental cleanings and procedures.
Thanks again.
You might ask the surgeon what he thinks about this situation. I am on Reclast and had an infusion one month before my knee replacement. My surgeon told me it wouldn't be a problem.
