Hip Replacement
I'm allergic to metal and hope to find a non metal hip replacement. Has anyone had experience with a device that does not have any metal, including screws?

@tag313 Welcome to Mayo Connect. I'm sorry you have this extra complication in your search for a hip replacement. There are full ceramic replacements, but these can tend to be brittle, so I'm not sure how many surgeons use them. But there is also a technology for fully encasing titanium in a ceramic coating as well. You will probably need to seek out a large ortho practice or hospital to find someone experienced in using these.
What research have you done so far?
Thank you so much for your reply.
I am in Boston and have been through the orthopedic departments at our top hospitals. Mass General, Brigham and Womens (who have actually merged). New England Baptist, the largest orthopedic ONLY hospital in New England. Yesterday I returned to see a renowned spine surgeon who did surgery on my cervical spine at New England Baptist 6 years ago-where I learned the hard way that I am indeed allergic to several metals in the device. He removed the metal after 3 years of misery. He has moved to a new private practice called the Boston Bone and Joint Institute, specializing in the obvious. They have no solution for me. Thus, I am reaching out to other resources, other states, different hospital corporations. I am quite desperate at this point. Thank you for reaching out.

I am also in New England. Has anyone ever talked with you about ceramic coated titanium? This doctor in Seattle mentions it as an option stronger than ceramic alone and coating the metal for those sensitive to metals.
What were your metal sensitive symptoms?

Thank you! This is very helpful. I have read about the ceramic coated devices. I have certainly asked about it at MGH and as recently as yesterday at the Boston Bone and Joint Institute. They've both sort of glazed over. Apparently not in their tool boxes and not interested in researching the possibilities. I am aware of the doctor in Seattle and I believe there is one in CO. Not easy to travel for such a major surgery and recovery. My metal allergy symptoms were varied and severe. Began with extreme pain at the surgery site. Fewver. Extreme joint and muscle pain. Headaches, blistering rashes, Constant flu-like symptoms. Very high white blood cell count. VERY high BP. I felt my hip deteriorating daily. After 3 years he agreed to remove the metal. I had immediate relief but much damage had been done by my immune system attacking my joints. It is debilitating.
I have too "titanium" hips. I am metal sensitive but the titanium was non reactive for me. Had them for 2 decades now....
