Higher blood pressure readings since starting hydroxyurea?
Diagnosed with ET with JAK2 mutation June 2025. Started hydroxyurea and low dose aspirin. Platelets were 393 last labs. I normally take blood pressure at home on a regular basis. Noticed the last month blood pressure is higher than it has been. Trying to figure our what is causing higher readings.

sylann725, that platelet count is great!
But high blood pressure numbers are scary. I'm so sorry you have this worry.
In hopes of reassuring you, I'll share that my BP went sky-high until HU began bringing down my platelet count.
My BP numbers are normal again now. I hope this problem will be temporary for you too.
But right now, it's a concern. Would you feel comfortable asking your doctor about it?

4 ReactionsI’m just guessing, but I would think that having above average platelet and blood cell density in your blood stream would require more pressure to keep it all moving through all the blood vessels in your system. After taking the hydroxy for awhile, the reduced cell density might result in a lower BP level.

1 Reaction@sylann725, did you find out the reason for the elevated blood pressure? Did you consult your doctor about it?

1 Reaction@colleenyoung I didn't consult my doctor because I didn't want an increase in medication. Decided to make some changes and if it didn't work then I would consult them. Their diagnosis is based on information that I provide and I wasn't sure what was causing it. Had kind of fallen off the wagon as far as healthy eating. Cut back on sweets and added more fruit, salads and fluids. Blood pressure has dropped.

4 Reactions@sylann725, making lifestyle adjustments can help. I wonder if you've heard of this:
- Orthostatic hypotension (postural hypotension) https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/orthostatic-hypotension/symptoms-causes/syc-20352548
I'm not diagnosing (not qualified). However, I share this resource from Mayo Clinic in case there are some things listed that might be contributors to your issue, like dehydration and other potential causes.
