High dose Vitamin D continuation with normal levels
I have been on Vitamin D for a couple of years (50,000 once a week), ever since my osteo diagnosis in 2024. In March 2024 my level was 23; July of 2024 after a couple months of prescription D it was up to 48 and has stayed there (50 most recently). I am experiencing constipation from I believe the calcium (1200, plus whatever calcium I get from food) in combo with the D. My gastro doc (IBS for 20+ years) thinks maybe, he said try Miralax. Would rather fix the cause of the problem than add a laxative; what if it works too well?!? I guess my question is do any of you take vitamin D2 prescription strength with no end in sight, even if D levels are around 50? And what about D3 (seems like a better choice). I asked (email) my endo's office about getting off prescription D and the answer was that my chart said to take it (not the question I asked!).

@tillymack interesting, will look into that as it becomes a lot of pills to take if you need calcium 2 times a day, plus possibly magnesium, plus vitamin D once or twice a day depending on recommended IU, plus my fiber capsules, plus my vitamin K! And I am not on any prescription drugs; add that in and it gets a bit crazy for us!

1 ReactionThank you all for your insight on Vitamin D. I have been concerned about taking that much (50,000/week) for 2 years when levels were great but my doc didn't want me off it for some reason. Finally, he has given me the OK to move to 5000, he did not specifically suggest D3 but as all the medical research I've encountered says a much better choice specifically for bones, and maintaining levels. Still leery of that much D since it seems to be contributing to IBS issues; but next step in that (if things do not get better) is another appointment with the gastro!

Do your doctors order repeat Vit D levels for you? Mine do not appear anxious to do so...

If it wasn’t the question, you asked then you need to do the research and take it to your doctor. I think maybe you’re asking us what we think of what your doctor said. And it’s impossible for us to tell you, however what most of the people in this thread miss aren’t that most of us women need vitamin D after age 50 and we know it by taking a test. I am on D3. Vitamin D is something that needs to stay within a particular range between 30 and 80. And it also needs to be looked at in conjunction with your A1c! And YES we need to be tested periodically to make sure our vitamin D is somewhere around the middle of the 30 to 80 result. Remember when you get a blood test it’s not exact so your vitamin D level is gonna fluctuate 20 points. As we get older, we need more vitamin D. ESPECIALLY if we have dark colored skin. The dark colored skin prevents the sun from making the vitamin D in our bodies. I get labs once a year and check all of my metabolic issues. Also calcium is something else people should have tested before they randomly take supplements. It is something that can be dangerous. If you have heart disease you don’t want to supplement extra calcium, or it will harden your arteries. Try to go to the doctor once a year if you’re over 65 and get your wellness check up that Medicare provides you and ask for those tests and do your own homework!!!
