Has anyone had surgery to repair hiatal hernia

@emeleen

Hi, I didn’t know so many people had had this operation. I had a very large para oesophagel hernia repaired about 3 years ago and have had digestive problems ever since. It was took 7 hours to repair and contained the majority of my stomach and also transverse colon. Now having problems with my colon and slow bowel motility. Was diagnosed with gastroparesis to start with and now rapid gastroparesis. Have nod idea if my vagus nerve was damaged as had a fundoplication was well.I am also not able to vomit The only symptoms were not being able to eat or breathe properly. My upper abdomen is full of adhesions from the operation. I live in Australia and have not had much help from any GIs. The only suggestion has been to get my colon removed.Sorry I am not handling it at all well.but pleased that other people have had some relief.

ladysky when I came to Maryland my IBS was out of control and was not even treated. When I finally could not tolerate the pains and bowl control I went to a gastroenterologist and he put me medication plus fiber and so far it is in control. Sometimes I think of weening off the medication but I feel since my IBS is under control why mess with it. I have missed days where I was not able to take the medication and nothing happened so I take my meds and move on

Thanks very much for you reply. Pleased you have found something to give you relief. My colon is the problem now and my stomach isn’t working properly. The GI I saw think the nerves have been damaged. Do you ever look up the Inspire Group. June

Sounds like you are doing well with the medication and missing one isn’t a crisis, which is a good thing because we all forget now and then! Keep up feeling good and keeping it under control!

@kdubois, would you have any insight as well, about hiatal hernia surgery?

@tlv68, could you tell us a little more about your condition? How have you managed so far?

I had a Nissen Fundoplication surgery at Mayo Rochester on October 18, 2016. I had a 4 cm hiatal hernia, and suffered from GERD since 2004.

Since the surgery to fix the hernia and malfunctioning sphincter between my esophagus and stomach, I have had NO heartburn — at all! This is awesome because Mayo also figured out that I don’t properly metabolize both PPIs and H2 antagonist medications, and taking these medications was basically slowly killing me.

So glad I had this surgery, and I ADORE my Mayo GI/Hepatology and Thoracic Surgery team!
