Treating Osteoporosis: What works for you?

Posted by heritage1955 @heritage1955, Apr 1, 2016

Hi. I'm new to the site and am interested in treating osteoperosis. I'm 39 yo and recently had a bone density that showed I'm at -2.4. So, going through the intial "I can't believe it" stuff. 🙂

There is a new tool based on advanced techniques that you can give your symptoms and it would give you matched diseases.

Thank you for moving my discussion to the appropriate spot. I didn't see osteoporosis listed so went w/"chronic pain." This fusion procedure for my neighbor's vetebrae I just heard about yesterday so haven't discussed it w/an MD who knows my condition. She explained that the spine is repositioned the way it's supposed to be, and wires/screws are used which do not need to be removed. Muscles are not cut. My bones probably aren't strong enough to withstand this idea. I don't have a name for the procedure other than "fusion." In 4-6 mos the patient will be able to go skiing! The need for this stems from an accident at age 7.

I just heard of success w/ a new fusion technique using a CT scan during the operation to treat spondylothentisis (displacement of vertebrae); does anyone know if this treatment can be applied to vertebrae broken due to osteoporosis?

Hello @cynthia1, and welcome to Connect. I moved your discussion and combined it with a very extensive discussion regarding treating osteoporosis in the Bones, Joints & Muscles group on Mayo Clinic Connect. I moved your discussion here because there is a long list of other members talking about treatments for Osteoporosis.

@cynthia1, would you care to talk a little bit more about the fusion technique you have heard about? What is the technique called? Is it a treatment that you have discussed with your physician?

Is that the T score or the Z score?

I totally 'get it'. I had broken ribs sneezing, broken clavicle reaching for the phone...The shock....at 35 I fractured my T9 playing volleyball on July 4th. Really I was only raising my arms above my head. After multiple weeks of therapy and little relief of pain and back spasms I saw a spine specialist. He took an X-ray (1st one) and I found out about the fracture (Sept 10). I had my initial DEXA scan with -2.9 spine and -4.7 hips. Premenopausal and no history of osteoporosis. Started on Fosamax daily...worked for a while then tapered off...then 2 years of Forteo (worked wonderfully and wished I could have remained on that for longer but not suggested), then Fosamax weekly....At this time I was diagnosed with Systemic Mastocytosis because of the severe numbers on my scans and spots on skin. I was sent to Mayo and saw 3 doctors, many tests and a bone marrow biopsy (having extra mast cells in bones)...causing more brittleness. My osteoporosis specialist at home gave me a 'drug holiday' since I'd been on medication for so long and at a younger age. Plus with the diagnosis at Mayo...I ended up with chemo (Interferon) 3 x a week for 3 years. Then 2 years ago I slipped and broke my pelvis in 5 spots and was told no surgery since I have 90 year old bones. So after 11 weeks began Prolia. I am on the end of my 2nd year. Really was the only thing left for me to use. Hasn't worked as well as Forteo...but could be age as I'm now 60. I have had NO side effects from any of the medications.

so sorry for all the complications you have had to endure. I think the side effect many are concerned about is that many of the medications prescribed for osteoporosis make bones more brittle and can actually cause breakage in larger bones. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Any one of the drugs that interferes with osteoblasts/ and clasts may increase bone MASS, as per DEXA, but not necessarily make it stronger! Exercise and diet is a way we can control it better ourselves or as well as drugs if you must.

I bought her audio book, it talked only of Osteoporosis, it cost 17.00$. I have every weekend exercises to do, fun and balance and fitness and with it comes a thorough explantation of the bones and muscles and nutrients and chemical reactions etc etc, I have never been better informed, if only our kids were taught this way, with practical backed by science … you can buy her book if and programme if you chose, i haven't, i am busy with the free stuff. She is not like so many others. You would be able to answer your own questions if you took the time to read some of the information on her website (free).

Big Pharma make big money telling normal people they need drugs and have a disease! Like many folk I have a bit of health scare. Before this I took my precious body for granted. I found a fantastic Book and Website. I have never had a more thorough insight into my bones, a so so important structure/organ of our bodies. So much to it, that tampering with it seems a great sin.

Walking is one of the best bone-building activities you can do and if a person is doing only one exercise, that's the one to do! Give yourself credit for doing this, in spite of your other medical problems.
