Treating Osteoporosis: What works for you?
Hi. I'm new to the site and am interested in treating osteoperosis. I'm 39 yo and recently had a bone density that showed I'm at -2.4. So, going through the intial "I can't believe it" stuff. 🙂

Interesting and thanks.
I started using Collagen about 9 months ago. After reading a lot about it, I figured it can’t hurt. I don’t know how to “prove” it helps with Osteoporosis, but my hair and nails are much stronger!
This is slightly off-topic but don't know a better thread for it. I found this article from the U.K. dealing with osteoporosis and fractures. It lists using a TENS unit as a help in dealing with pain. I had to use one for a year for a bad back injury and the TENS unit helped a lot. I am just putting this out there for anyone dealing with pain and unfamiliar with it.

"If you're diagnosed with osteoporosis, there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of a fall, such as removing hazards from your home and having regular sight tests and hearing tests.
To help you recover from a fracture, you can try using:
hot and cold treatments such as warm baths and cold packs
transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) – where a small battery-operated device is used to stimulate the nerves and reduce pain by stimulating the nerves"

Glad you got a reply. I guess if they come together it is OK. But I try to separate between morning and evening. But now my Ca is a little high so have cut back. I try to watch my serum levels and not take too much. since my bout with CH and afib.
Thank you for your reply.
The Bone Support I take has both calcium and magnesium so I take them together after a meal. However, there are several kinds (forms?) of magnesium so that might be true for some of them. I think it's hard to get all of this exact, and in balance and at the right ratio, so I just bought the supplement that has good reviews, with calcium from algae, and am hoping for the best 😏.
Are any of you taking collagen for osteopenia or osteoporosis?
I read that you should not take calcium and magnesium together. Do you know if that is true?
I take my calcium and magnesium separately, at least two hours apart. I was told they compete with each other but so many supplements have them together in a consistent ratio. I also take 2-3,000 units Vitmain D and 45mcg Vitamin K2, and potassium in the form of low sodium V-8.
If your PTH is high, doesn't that contribute or even cause osteoporosis? There was a lot of discussion on this on the Inspire forum. People have surgery on their parathyroid rather than take medication for bones, as I recall, or maybe both.
Has your T3 been tested? Low thyroid means meds too. Are you on a medication for your thyroid? I forget..
How is your heart doing? We can do private messages if you prefer.....
Sure am glad to hear from you. The tortoise thinks about the hare most every day. Saw my PCP Thurs. He thinks my Cardio Drs should be watching all the new drugs. Had blood work done, results are interesting. My TSH, FT4, and PTH are all on the rise again and some high abnormal values. My PCP is calling Monday about my results, can not wait to see what he is going to do next. On the good side, my HCT and HCT were great, not low and overall CBC was good for me.
I can not wait for this hot weather to go away and bring some much-needed rain. My yard trees that are 6-10 years old are turning brown, not a pretty sight. I hope we do not lose them.
Question- do you take your Mg and Ca together? My Ca level is staying too high, so do not really need any extra, but my K is at the low normal level. Trying to keep a balance sometimes is diffcult.
Take care and hope you had a great visit. Have not seen by daughter in almost three years. Keep up the good work at 7. KLH
