Help with pain after 3 months of TKR

Posted by fran102 @fran102, Mar 8, 2023

It has been 3 months since I had TKR and still have terrible pain behind my knee. I finally got my ROM up to 115 and can bend my knee when walking although I still have to use a walker. I’m going to get a second opinion because my surgeon has been totally unhelpful. Does anyone have any recommendations on coping with the pain and is this normal? I feel so frustrated and scared I might be this way for the rest of my life. It’s pretty much nonstop pain. I go to PT 3x a week for 2 hour sessions and they have helped me with ROM and knee strengthening but have so far to go. They are trying to get me a Dynasplint. Has anyone ever used one and does it help? Thank you so much for any advice you can give me. I’m so depressed! I had no idea it would be like this.

Don't despair 3 months isn't long at all after a major operation, I'm 11 months after and still remember how bad I felt then, it takes time and patience and a lot of work, I'm still not 100 percent but much much better than I was, keep up the work it will help you enormously and you won't look back! Best wishes on your recovery

Thank you for your encouraging words! I’m very slowly making progress. I’m glad you are doing better and I hope someday I can say all this is worth it!

I am 8 months out now of revision that I had a year out of original tkr donn no I feel your pain … I still get tightness and pain behind my knee … I go for graston technique it helps tremendously…. Not sure if you are far enough out of surgery for it but definitely something to look into …..mfr helps with with scar tissue if you are not doing also worth a shot… I am always in search of different ways to help with arthritis pain and in turn can help with my knee…. Right now I am trying out a pulse magnetic therapy (pemf) mat…. I have had only a few day so let you know …. But try the graston I did last week felt amazing afterwards… good luck

I am just a little past three months and experiencing the same situation. My ROM IS 115 like yours. I have had terrible calf pain and pain behind the knee. My doctor says this is normal,it’s just gonna take a while he said. I won’t be fully healed for one year, but it’s been pretty hard to get good sleep. when you’re so much pain all the time.

Think I’m finally making some very slow progress but I think I’ll be a year also. It’s tough. I wish I could take anti inflammatories because I think that speeds up the process. Hang in there. Guess we are both learning patience which I don’t have!

Consider trying a prescription for Diclofenac Cream 8% and applying it to areas that are painful. Worked so well for me.

Well had an Arthroscopy of my TKR on April 19, 4 months after the TKR due to excruitiang pain and stiffness. The surgeon found a large ball of scar tissue. I start back to PT today and cannot wait. My pain that I have is a normal post of pain and the stiffness is GBE and the locking up too. I feel like I am finally on my way to recovery. I use No assistive device and walk without a limp finally.

They’re using PT to deal with the scar tissue?

How has that impacted you? Was it hard to recover from?
