HELP Problem swallowing. Burping, breathing..

Posted by ace343x @ace343x, 4 days ago

Hi, I am a mouth breather with a deviated septum. twice in the last week, my throat closed down and it was very hard to breathe. Two nights ago it was very hard to swallow and I had to get up from my sleeping position to swallow. this happened many times. Last night every time I swallowed, I could not get the air back up from my esophagus or wherever the air needs to go back up from. It causes me to gag. Yes I can breathe through my nose, but only for a certain limited time because I have a deviated septum and then nostrils will shut down after a while. Even though I can breathe through my nose, my esophagus or whatever in that area gets clogged up and it is a major problem. I think I may need to remove my tonsils and/or as adenoids to have less obstruction in the airway of my mouth since my mouth breather. I had Vivaer treatment for my deviated septum, but it does not help. It does help if I force myself to belch bringing up the remaining air that’s trapped inside, but that’s not a permanent fix and that does not solve the problem entirely. I cannot eat properly because every time I chew and swallow it’s hard to get the air back up.

Hello ace343x and welcome to Connect. We are all patients or caregivers here so cannot diagnose your problem, but can share our experience. I hope others can give you some input form their experiences. I wonder if you may be having a motility issue with your esophagus.? Or perhaps it is more associated with your laryngeal area? Have you had a cold or viral infection lately? I think a visit to your doctor with a precise description of symptoms might be your next step. They can do swallowing studies fairly easily to see if that is the issue.
As to the nasal breathing, do Breathe right strips help you at night? When I had my facial paralysis and nostril collapsing they were very helpful for me.
Good luck with this issue and keep in touch. Sharing whatever you discover may help others here in the future.

I tried Vicks vapo cool advanced version rub on my chest and esophagus. It was nice but didn’t help the problem. Vicks vapocool lozenges severe version made it worse. I thought it would help clear and open up the esophagus but it did not and it backfired.
