Hearing Loss: social isolation?
Has anyone else experienced intense social isolation due to hearing loss? Where I live there’s a huge deaf community but it’s super far from me since I can’t drive. I’m in the cusp of moderate to mild hearing loss and I only know a beginner amount of sign so I feel left out in the hearing and deaf world leaving me with no friends at all. Does anyone else have that experience? Any tips?

Yes, I also have hearing loss and yes there is social isolation involved, but it can be improved by hearing aids or Air Pod Pro ear buds. I purchased hearing aids about 10 years ago and they worked well for me. I paid under $2,000 for them and the current price is $7,000. So, I did an online test with Jabra and had a tele-visit with an audiologist and things went great for a cost of under $2,000. I recently tried the Air Pod Pro 4 from Apple and they are the best, for phone calls, and hearing that I have tried with a very reasonable cost of $250. The clarity of the Air Pod Pros, for me, are actually better than the hearing aids purchased. I understand that hearing aids are not exactly the same as your hearing, but they certainly make a big difference in social isolation. I wish you the best with your journey!

1 ReactionI have $5000 hearing aids and still have trouble hearing unless I am looking at the person I am talking to. It’s not volume it is clarity. The audiologist says I am reading lips. So yes it has affected my social interactions
Hearing aids will never be able to be as perfect as your own hearing, but they do greatly improve the isolation.
