Hearing change after a cold on my cochlear implant side

Posted by lsammartino @lsammartino, Nov 12, 2022

This was my first respiratory virus after having had implant surgery 2 years ago so I’m not sure what the new normal is when one gets a bad cold with sinus pressure/congestion. It was about 3 weeks later I developed a reverberating sound on my implant side and it worsens when I press on my ear itself. It’s also louder when i remove my processor. I feel like my hearing is not as crisp either. I saw my pcp who said there’s no fluid in my ears. The other weird symptom is that ever since my fever, that ear turns bright fiery red and has a burning sensation, only externally, not internal. I can’t get in to my clinic doctor till Jan 3 so I will wait and see. Hoping things will clear up and return to normal. I’m at 6 weeks out from when I first had the virus/fever. It wasn’t covid and it wasn’t the flu (or so my test results said). Would love to hear from others with an implant who might have experienced changes after a respiratory virus. Thanks.

I've not heard of this but will ask some of the people I know who have CIs. Please keep us posted if you learn more.,

While your post is quite old I wanted to mention my cochlear implant hearing is strongly impacted by colds. Sound becomes tinny and harsh. Always a bore.

Does this improve after your cold goes away?

Yes absolutely. Night and day improvement.
FWIW - using decongestants during a cold also help.
