Hearing aid fit in ear for best clarity

Posted by snydergram @snydergram, 3 days ago

I have severe/profound loss in both ears. Got ReSound Nexus aids 6 months ago and cannot get good fit in one ear even after 3 tries at earmolds and numerous visits to competent audiologist. I can press on aid in certain way and get much better clarity but it will not stay when I let go. Is this common and what to do next?

Your message highlights the importance of fit of not just the earmolds, but other factors as well. Several questions come to mind, and your audiologist may have already asked about them, but need to make sure these were addressed: 1. Do you have a hole in or leak from the edge of your eardrum? (This would need an ENT visit to confirm, I believe). Such a cause could lead to feedback or improper fit. 2. Do you have any wax buildup in a certain area of your ear (because you can press "in a certain way" for more clarity, this could be an issue. 3. Do you have any moisture-related issues that could cause a difference in the seal of the earmold? My husband was a strong perspirer, and we had to have him wear moisture-wicking covers on his hearing aids, (but started with covers made of duck material years before). Because of the shape of the outer ear, moisture can gather more in one area as opposed to another, so this could possibly be a fit issue. 4. Also, using a drying aid to keep moisture out of the aid itself could be important. If moisture is inside the aid (rather than in tubing or hook or dome), it may or may not be so noticeable by the audiologist. 5. Controls (knobs, wheels or pressure switches) could be intermittently faulty (not found always on short examination of the instrument). Or, they could have moisture affecting them, as well. These are my thoughts, from over 60 years personal use experience with various types of hearing aids, (almost all with ear molds), and 10+ years as an advisor, coach and consultant (plus lip reading instructor) for the hearing challenged. Hope this helps.
