Head of pancreas tumor
I have a 2.7 cm tumor on the head of my pancreas discovered in May of this year and am receiving 2 different chemo drugs every two weeks. My CA 119 has gone from 400 down to 23 since May. The surgeon is recommending the Whipple procedure if I can get my strength built up. Anyone had this procedure and what are pros and cons as a patient.

Very similar, I was diagnosed in 7/23. 6 months of chemo followed by 3 weeks radiation then the Whipple in April 24. I just had my year and a half scan and all is clear. I'm 68 and living life with no restrictions, so that is the Pro's. Where are you being treated? Wishing you all the best.
OKC is where I go for treatments. Stephenson cancer center. Wonderful people.
I was diagnosed with tumor on the head of my pancreas 2/25. Stage 1, not sure of size in cm. Had 5 rounds of chemo, Folfirinox, then Whipple 6/10/25. I was 71, in good shape before all this started, going to the gym 3xwk, and walking my dogs 4-5/days/wk.
Whipple is major, but I would say doable, and I knew I would go for it, a shock when I found out I wasn't as healthy as I thought, having cancer.
The first month after surgery involved some laying around, taking it slow and doing everything my doctors recommended. Now 12 weeks after surgery I have no pain and have started back at the gym. I have found a personal trainer to be invaluable! Chemo - I have 4 more rounds to go - is still kicking my butt, just that I don’t have much energy, along with some other side effects from the Whipple - having my digestive system rewired essentially - and taking the pancreatic enzyme replacement drugs to help with digestion. May have to take these forever. Bowel habits have changed but hope to get these straightened out so I am absorbing nutrients and will have more energy. It’s a work in progress. Very grateful to be here! I won’t be giving up any time soon!
what enzyme are you taking? Creon is very expensive and trying to find it at a more reasonable cost? Any Ideas?
I have been on Zen Pep (20000) 3xday with meals, and it is expensive -$194 month is my co-pay (it was $394/month till I was able to get it from the hospital by mail order). Also taking the smaller dose (10000) 3xday with snacks, and this is $94/month. But my doctor wants me to up the dosage of enzymes, I am still losing weight, so taking more might help. My dietitian said I could try an otc enzyme supplement - Vital Nutrients, you can get it through Amazon - $40/90 pills - taking this as the second pill at meals. It adds up, but the mail order option, plus the otc supplement help to keep the cost down a little. I just started taking the Vital Nutrients yesterday so don’t know yet if it’s working.
