Have Mayo referral. How long does it take to get in?

Posted by pacathy @pacathy, Mar 6, 2023

I saw the NP today and got the referral to Mayo Clinic. The clinic had trouble with faxing info, so I brought the packet home and did it. Has anyone had a consult there recently? How long does it take to get in? I'd spoken with the appointment line and was told there are openings in March, but I can't schedule until info is reviewed. Is end of March or early April a realistic time frame to hope for?

I should add that I don't have a MAC diagnosis yet, just CT's suspicious of it, and need to see a their general pulmonary clinic for diagnosis.

I am currently going to Mayo in Jacksonville. Believe me you will not regret it!!! Their professionalism an efficiency is unmatched. I self referred in July 22 and was seen in August.

A sputum culture is required to diagnose MAC and the culture needs approximately 6 weeks to grow. I was diagnosed with MAC 2 1/2 years ago and a chest scan in Dec 2022 showed it is twice as bad as it was in 2021. I went from 125 lbs to 97 lbs in six months. I called Mayo five months ago but was told they were booked for 3 months - call back after 3 months. I finally contacted them via online and told I would receive a call from scheduling within 3 days. Great news - they called back on the 3rd day and asked me 3 questions - name, date of birth, and insurance provider. I was simply told ‘we don’t accept Aetna Medicare’ (self pay not an option).

I'm so sorry. That is terrible news.
I spoke with the pulmonary department yesterday and have an appointment for Monday. They said Monday or May and scheduled flights, shuttles and hotel to make the appt Monday. I have intake phone appt today so certainly hope they take Medicare with Aetna as a secondary, not an Advantage. I went there years ago for a surgery and was in their system.

Hi,
I have been a Mayo Jax patient for several years & am very satisfied. They do NOT take any Medicare Advantage plans, and as far as I know, sent their patients several notices about this prior to or during Medicare’s open enrollment last year. When I was diagnosed with bronchiectasis & MAC 5 yrs ago, I switched to a Supplement plan to ensure I could go wherever I wanted to go. For some unknown reason, I was turned down at Mayo initially, but after further communication, was accepted. I had been a patient there 15 years prior. I hope those trying to get an appt. will be successful! Take care, Linda

The intake rep gave me the business office number and I spoke with them. They still accept plain Medicare, but she said Jacksonville Mayo no longer takes the Advantage plans. She thought Rochester might take some of them, but since I have Medicare with a supplement, I'm set. The staff members I've spoken with have been super nice!

After chatting with the Rochester business office, it sounds like you need to check with the business office at the location you would visit.

It was a general question. I am not planning to go to Mayo. But what I gather from reading these posts is that they would accept an Aetna Supplemental plan (medigap) along with Medicare. That is NOT the same thing as an Advantage plan which it sounds like they do not take, at least not Aetna.
