has anyones periphial neuropathy worsened from taking beta blockers

Posted by amenbon @amenbon, May 11 11:59am

I was put on Metoprolol for heart condition and it seems it was soon after that my periphial neuropathy in my feet, lower legs, and hands worsened. I am wondering if anyone else has had the same experience or if there is a beta blocker out there that doesn't affect it.

This piques my interest because I was prescribed Eliquis and Metoprolol for afib. a few months ago. Not long after that, I developed Polymyalgia Rheumatica and have been on Prednisone. My neuropathy symptoms in my calves and feet are definitely more pronounced and bothersome. I have been blaming the Prednisone.

Welcome @ppfsecretary, Great question but I don't think it's a simple answer since there is no cure. The Foundation for Peripheral Neuropathy has a list of treatments here - https://www.foundationforpn.org/therapies/.

Have you been diagnosed with neuropathy? What symptoms do you have?

amenbon, beta blockers increase vasoconstriction which increases the symptoms of peripheral neuropathy. They are not thought to increase damage to the nerves. There may be another medication that would serve you better.

I have no scientific proof of anything regarding Metoprolol. However…… I will say it’s the newest change to my medication - I moved to a new state and my new cardiologist said Metoprolol (and Entresto) were his drugs of choice vs the one my old doctor had me on, so we switched. Recently, I had a routine EGD that I’m supposed to get every 5 years. I had a TERRIBLE reaction to the anesthesia, from cardiac rhythm to Neurological. The neuro piece was serious convulsions and shaking, like I had ALS or something. I couldn’t hold things or walk straight or safely, non-stop, I couldn’t do anything to stop it. It lasted about 12 hours but I had the fear of God I’d be relegated to a nursing home for life, all over anesthesia. All side affects passed in a week. My ICD computer captured the cardiac irregularities.

The doctors seem to dismiss it since it resolved itself, but I’m looking for answers. One doc theorized I was given too much fetanol or something in the anesthesia and my reaction was because of possible overdose of it, then withdrawal. I want other opinions, because my gut says it was a reaction with the Metoprolol. I can’t prove it, and they can’t disprove it, but I’m still asking around. Right now I’m forgoing all routine procedures that require anesthesia until/unless I feel I have specialty anesthesia care on alert. We all react differently to things, but something very serious occurred with my Neurological system and my neuropathy after my first (and only) anesthesia event with Metoprolol. I would certainly inquire with each member of your medical care team to make sure you’re getting the best medications for your total health care needs. It may be the best thing for your situation.

@linmary358 You and I should keep comparing notes. I had a direct fall on my knees several weeks ago. I went to Urgent Care and x-rays were not suggested because I was pain-free and showing no visible swelling. I am tapering my doses of Prednisone for Polymylagia Rheumatica and Giant Cell Arteritis. I may have osteoarthritis. As my Rheumotologist says "lots of moving parts". All I know is that my R knee is killing me and my neuropathy symptoms are much worse. It's not merely numbness and tingling but rather a profound tightness and discomfort that I can no longer ignore. I think it's time for an x-ray to R/O an internal injury from the fall.
I'll see my Rheumotologist in June, as well as my Neurologist. My Cardiologist is satisfied that I'm doing well on the Eliquis and Metoprolol. He only suggested that I start taking my statin in the evening. This 73 yr old was fairly healthy up until the first of the year 2026.
