Has anyone with osteoradionecrosis had hypobaric treatment prior surge
After 2 episodes of cancer surgery, first on my right jaw followed by 30 radiation treatments, then partial glossectomy of the tongue, I developed osteoradionecrosis. This has continued to destroy the jaw reconstruction for nearly 3 years. I have finally found a surgeon who will raise my right lip from which I drool and clean out the damaged bone, remove the clamps, clips, and screws in the jaw, and test both ends of the jaw that remain. If osteoradionecrosis does not recur within 6 to 12 months, the surgeon may consider some surgery to improve function or appearance. I am wondering if hypobaric treatment prior to my surgery or red light therapy after might improve the outcome. Anyone?

M0hlpp, when I was in hyperbaric treatment, there were several in the chamber having hyperbaric treatments before their oral surgeries. I think it was to reduce inflammation. Early on these patients talked about pain relief from the session. All were in for the 2 hour daily, except weekends for a year before surgery. All were patients from UCSD.
Many oral surgeons are using Forteo for osteoradionecrosis because it increases bone growth and increases integration of the hardware. Forteo is also being used for osteonecrosis even in the absence of radiation.
The hyperbaric process is slow and you may not, your surgeon may not think it wise to wait.
You can see I wanted to wish you well without knowing anything.
Best luck with your surgery.

Thank you. My prior surgeon felt it was not effective. I'd like to take steps to stop it this time.

1 ReactionHave you discussed this with your Dr? My understanding is doctors are recommending this treatment for certain issues. I have osteoradionecrosis of the ribs so very interested!
@janiebill
My doctors do not believe in hyperbaric treatment. Over 3 years, they let my jaw deteriorate and plate screws pop through my cheek. My second doctor just put me on antibiotics at my request before a minor surgery to clean out the infected jaw and to raise a drooping right lip. She says I may be on antibiotics the rest of my life to control the ORN. Any subsequent surgery will depend on the health of each remaining bone segment and the ORN.
@m0h1pp is anyone offering teriparatide? https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32614699/ https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00198-017-4343-2
Are you seen by an oral surgeon.
@gently No one has suggested this, but other osteoblastic meds were ruled out because of the cancer. I'll ask my new surgeon to consider. Several of my skilled dentists seem to be frustrated with the lack of progress at a cancer center.
