Has anyone tried bone health supplements, and did you find one that he

I have osteoporosis, and have seen adds for different bone health supplements, and have wondered if any of them work. Worried about going on medicine, with all the side effects.

Perhaps you could share a bit of information. What are your dexa scores and your age. Thanks

Hi. I've tried everything. Natural supplement, diet, you name it and after 30 years of 6 breaks and DEXA scan getting worse, nothing worked. After the final break, and very depressed about it, I broke down and with a DEXA of -5.3 I knew I had to do medication. (I got to age 73 without having to take any meds!) So I am now on my 3rd shot of Evenity. Thank goodness my only side effect is achy legs and I'm hoping it doesn't build up over this year to get worse. Everyone is different and it depends on your numbers, lifestyle, eating habits etc. I've heard some good stories of people using strontium but then there are the stories that it skews your DEXA scan numbers and not build bones. Don't really know. Good luck

After 6 breaks ! The suffering must have been awful. What kept you from starting after the first fracture?

As your doctor has surely told you, you will need a follow up drug to maintain the gains from Evenity. Take care and let us know how it works for you.

I was hesitant to start any meds since the first time I was diagnosed I took one Boniva pill and couldn't walk for a week! Really had no strength or muscle tone in my legs. That reaction scared me to no end so I was very gun shy. But once I saw the DEXA #'s going down even more I knew I had to try something else.

@jabjune

Which med did you decide on with your endocrinologist?

I found a wonderful Rheumatologist who put me on Evenity for one year. I tried all types of doctors and none of them seemed to understand my emotional issue with the side effects that I previously experienced. So far the evenity seems to be good. Had 3 shots but I do feel achy legs - but I'm told that means it's working. The crazy thing is I have to be careful since the achy legs from the meds means I'm stiff and don't walk normally and I'm afraid of falling!

Hi Annie and welcome,
I have had osteoporosis twice! I had a rare autoimmune condition that required a huge amount of prednisone for a period of time (this was 10 years ago, 61yr old). The drug I was put on was Risedrornate a Bisphosphonate (Common types include oral bisphosphonates like alendronate (Fosamax), risedronate (Actonel), and ibandronate (Boniva), as well as intravenous options like zoledronic acid (Reclast) and pamidronate (Aredia). I got terrible side effects so decided to go au natural!. I reversed my osteoporsis to Ostopenia 2 years later - the Dexa Scan people said 'keep doing what you're doing!). But a bad accident in 2025 followed 1 week later by a heart attack, found me with on my back for a year and then a diagnosis of osteoporosis again when I slipped on some spilt drink and broke my wrist! Exercise and diet do work, not exercising, lying around and eating to put on weight exacerbates osteoporosis! - I went down to 101 lb (46kg) after the heart attack. I have started back on my natural regime and hopefully I can get back to Ostopenia again at 71.

Do your own research on the supplements in the list below and I am sure others can add their favourites for healthy bone growth - ALSO Ask your Medical professional first before adding supps, they may be contra-indicated on any other medicines you are taking.
I added walking with a weighted vest but apparently that is not going to make a difference for osteoporosis, but it will give fresh air and sunshine and make your soul happy!!

MY SUPPS
I started with D3 - Vitamin D plays an important role in the development of strong bones.

K2 - Important for bone mineralization and helps prevent fractures. 90 mcg daily for females aged 19 and older.

Magnesium Glycinate, Supports bone structure and helps with calcium metabolism.

Boron 3mg or 5 prunes daily. (alone or with other nutrients); this supplementation is demonstrably useful to support bone health (in order to prevent and maintain adequate bone mineral density), also considering the daily dose of 3 mg is much lower than the Upper Level indicated by EFSA in the daily dose of 10 mg. I take my prunes with a keto cereal with nuts, seeds, goatmilk yoghurt & goat milk for calcium for breakfast, (if busy I just take a 3mg boron pill)

Omega high strength EPA/DHA fish oil (metagenics) 2/day - omega-3 supplementation was associated with modest but significant improvements in bone mineral density, particularly at the femoral neck and spine.

1000 Mg Vit C - Essential for collagen formation, which is vital for bone strength.

Probiotics, L reuteri - Lactobacillus reuteri has been shown to reduce bone loss in older women with low bone mineral density, making it a potential therapy for osteoporosis. Studies indicate that supplementation can lead to significant improvements in bone health, particularly in postmenopausal women with osteopenia.
Research indicates that this probiotic can significantly reduce bone loss and improve bone health.

Zinc - Zinc is an essential mineral that is required for normal skeletal growth and bone homeostasis.
Furthermore, zinc appears to be able to promote bone regeneration. 8 mg daily for females aged 19 and over.

Calcium - Calcium you get from food is considered safer than calcium supplements, unless your Dr prescribes it. (Research which foods/drinks give you calcium & add to your diet)

I also take a fortified collagen peptide (one teaspoon) and 1 teaspoon of Red Macca in my decaf coffee in the morning.
* Collagen peptides may help improve bone mineral density and support bone health in individuals with osteoporosis, particularly when taken alongside calcium and vitamin D.
* Both black and red maca promote bone growth12.
Red Macca
Furthermore, one of the specific compounds isolated from maca, N‐(3‐methoxybenzyl)‐(9Z,12Z,15Z)‐octadecatrienamide (MBOC), has also been shown to promote bone formation through the Wnt/B-catenin pathway14. This molecular pathway regulates bone remodelling, initiates and maintains bone mineralisation, and calcium homeostasis, amongst other positive roles in bone formation and maintenance.

Altogether, these data indicate maca plays an important role in bone growth21. These studies also indicate that this natural remedy may provide a useful tool in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis.

I also use bone broth ( grass fed beef or chicken) in my cooking and eat plenty of Protein rich food)
I do heavy weight bearing exercises with a Physical Therapist and joined Brick House Bones for my daily Osteo work outs on You tube.
I wish you well ! Leonie

Very helpful. Do you have data showing bone density improvement? Before and currently? Also how many years have you been on this formula?

@leoniesnorton Good luck and I hope all your hard work pays off. I also take most of the supplements that you mentioned in addition to Ginger extract 550 mg as needed which I credit with reducing my A1C and helping to normalize my cholesterol numbers. Some may not realize that Cholesterol levels and bone health are an integrated metabolic process. At this time, I do not have osteoporosis and am hoping to prevent it with a plant based diet, exercise and supplements. Your story gives me hope, thank you.
