Has anyone treated their osteoporosis without drugs?

Posted by hemigal04 @hemigal04, Sep 20, 2025

Hello all … I am a 68 y/o lady, 5’1 and 115lbs. I have always been petite and of small stature. I recently went to a new physician who ran a battery of tests on me, which all came back great, except for my Dexa scan which came back with a T score of -3.8. The physician immediately wanted to write me a script for Fosamax. After reading about it, I am freaked out. Here’s a bit of background on me. I have never smoked, don’t drink and am fairly active. I still work part-time and love being active. Have any of you tried to combat osteoporosis from a “natural” healing angle? I have NEVER taken any meds, gosh I never even have the need for aspirin, as I don’t experience headaches. Looking for some input from actual people. It’s way too easy for a physician to write a script as I truly believe they are in cahoots with the pharmaceutical industry. My apologies if I have upset anyone. Any information, experience or feedback you can offer is greatly appreciated. Thank you for reading my post.

@gently thanks a ton ! I'm so grateful to this community for all the generous sharing of information and guidance .. I discovered my T score of - 3.5 - CTx - 850 & P1NP of 85..now trying to do research and had decided on the combo of forteo first and then fosamax .. after watching dr doug's video and the horrific side effects of fosamax of some people [rare but possible] i'm so scared.. In my city kolkata [India] I'm not sure how well the doctors really understand this disease and it's treatment..pl give ur opinion too as u have researched very thoroughly

@shail, there you are in Kolkata getting the best care available in the world because you've figured it all out.
Everywhere we are wondering if the doctors really understand the disease and the impact of the medications. Even when they do understand, they don't have the time to convey what they know. Osteoporosis doesn't seem to be in anyone's direct line of vision. They all have so many diseases to treat.
Now you have to careful not to fracture before Forteo has a chance to protect you.

@lilac2025 hello lilac, we share similar feelings and goals…I tried AlgaeCalPlus, but the magnesium in it gave me loose stools, not good for me, as I had CRC last year and must listen closely to my GI system… I have some New Chapter tint tabs, so I can adjust the dosage better… still searching…ConsumerLabs may be of help to you…I’ll let you whatever good things I discover in my continuing research…good luck !

@nycmusic Hi. Beware of New Chapter supplements. They and Algae Cal add strontium to their calcium bone formula that adds non beneficial "weight" to bones, causing DEXA scans to appear improved but in reality does nothing to improve bone density. My endocrinologist told me to avoid any "bone building " supplements that contain strontium. Best of luck to you.

Welcome @rabbits55, I too had heard that strontium is not advised for treating bone health. Here's some information on the topic from The Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation.

Have you found something that helps you build better bone health?

@rabbits55 ..presently looking at how to do good supplements,….combos don’t quite match my criteria, so I’m checking separate supplements…it’s a huge job…too bad there isn’t better medical guidance, so most of us are on our own…in addition to my own research, I’m using this portal for benefits from others’ experiences. And hope the share the best of what i find.

Here I am at 75 going on 76. Diagnosed osteopenia and then osteoporosis over 20 years ago. Refused medication because of the unacceptable and serious side effects. Decision seconded and evidenced for me by dental offices always asking about use of these medications. Fell or tripped with soft tissue injuries a few times over the years most recently fainted in the shower, “ouch” (no more steamy but enjoyable showers for me, I’m following cardiologist advice). So far not a single broken bone, thank heavens. I take vitamin D 3 in the fall, winter and early spring season and eat healthy, low fat cheese, yogurt, cottage etc. No red meats but chicken, fish, vegetables, nuts, dried fruit and even dessert. Try to stay away from ultra processed foods but processed ok and use organic when available. Think my body after menopause just naturally slowed down on it’s loss of bone integrity. This doesn’t mean to say I don’t have osteoporosis as I lost an inch or two but I don’t think it got worse and hasn’t caused any broken bones so far. Weight and height falls within an average range. Try to keep active. Friend of mine 79 years old very poor Dexta score also same decision, and no broken bones. I think it’s a matter of the risk. Percentage of woman with osteoporosis suffering from broken bone or suffering from medication side effects and the quality of everyday life. Until we get better treatment options decision remains an individual and personal choice. Wish it were different, better medication would be an answer to this dilemma.

@dougajoi You are doing wonderful if you haven’t fractured and have NOT used any meds! Keep on doing what you have been doing. Your bone QUALITY must be excellent! I think doctors put too much emphasis on the TScores and put people on medication without looking on Frax scores and testing bone QUALITY!! Thanks for sharing your story; you give me hope that we CAN stay off meds!!!

@nycmusic I am using the two supplements formulated by Keith McCormick, author of Great Bones through his company Osteonaturals. One is called Osteo stim and the other Osteo sustain. They are supposed to be complementary when taken together. I uploaded the labels into chat gpt for its opinion and it told me they were very beneficial to bone health.

I am in your shoes. Basically healthy, 69 yrs, and recently diagnosed. The endocrinologist was very rude and demeaning during my appointment, wouldn’t even let me finish asking a questions about nutrition and weight resistance….her way or the highway. She said I was severe (-3 ) and wanted me to start Reclast infusions.

I got the book ‘Great Bones” by Keith McCormick (suggested on Reddit ) and have been immersed in it. He explains the process of the osteoclast, osteoblasts, (cells that build and break down bone) and other tests available (not just Dexa). The book goes over the need for increasing your protein intake , not just calcium, and other dietary needs, boron (found in prunes and other foods) being a big one. Google his name. He has numerous YouTube interviews. I’ve also listened to podcasts interviews. While he isn’t anti meds in all cases, he is a wealth of information. Yes, to weight resistance as well. He is an athlete, as well as a chiropractor and suffered 12 fractures at the time he was only age 45. While he has NEVER even mentioned his website (osteonaturals) in any interview or in his new book, he offers several supplements. I have several of them and am taking daily while deciding what I need to do. He also offers consults and can order tests and help. I haven’t had a consult with him, but am considering if I am not successful in finding a different endocrinologist that will listen and be respectful to me.

Reddit has a subgroup called r/osteoporosis which has many men and women with the same diagnosis. They discuss different medication’s that they have been prescribed and taken, their experience with the meds any gains and losses that happened and the side effects . There are many men and women who discuss their treatments, side effects, and success or failure stories.

The book as well as r/osteoporosis group on Reddit helped me just knowing there are others feeling is overwhelmed as I am in searching for correct answers to our diagnosis.

Let us know… we all care about each other. If nothing else, get the book.. 😊

Can I ask if you are taking osteosustain and osteostim at the recommended dosages, 3 pills per day each? I started to do that, but had some concerns over the amount of vitamin k and biotin - seemed high, not to mention I am unfamiliar with most of what is in osteostim. Could either of you share your dosage and if you have had any side effects? Also, any positive results in BMD? I started taking osteosustain, but took osteostim for a limited time and only 1/ day . I am now taking Thorne advanced bone support and pure encapsulation calcium k/d, while I decide if the other is right for me or not. What is your opinion and dose of the osteo naturals product. I do also take osteo naturals collagen pep.
