Has anyone taken Risedronate Sodium 35 mg? Did it improve BMD ?

Posted by dalejandre @dalejandre, Nov 17 1:08pm

I have just started Risedronate Sodium 35mg once a week.
I have just taken it twice. The second time I had pain on my back; not severe but I had not had it before. If you have taken this med. please let me know how it went for you, especially if it improved bone density after taken it for one year.
I have read through this osteoporosis group and do not find a thing on Risedronate.

@dalejandre: hello. I took 150mg Risedronate tablets once every month for 3 1/2 yrs to control/increase bones from osteoporosis. At 3 1/2 yrs I insisted on DEXA scan to be sure all was well.
DEXA showed much reduction in bone stability! I LOST bone! As a result of this, I chose another treatment. I now take Evenity injections every month for 1 year - after much comparison in treatments this seemed to be the best choice of good results with little to no side effects. My fingers are crossed!
I am 6 months into treatment today.

That is bad news. I will have a DeXA scan in 1 year and will decide then if I should give Risedronate up for something else should I have no gain in BMD, I hope I will not have lost bone density as you did. I believe you only take Evenity for 1 year. Do you know what you will be taking after Evenity?
Best of luck and many thanks for your information.

Risedronate is an antiresorptive medication, which means it slows the rate of bone breakdown. You may (or may not) see small increases in BMD, especially at the spine, but these gains are achieved other than bone building. In case someone’s baseline bone resorption is very high, risedronate may not be strong enough in reducing it, which might translate to bone loss.

What’s more important is that risedronate has been shown in clinical studies to reduce fracture risk, even if the bone density numbers don’t rise much.

Another helpful aspect of risedronate is that it doesn’t stay in the bone as long as some other bisphosphonates, so if you ever need to switch to a bone-building medication such as Forteo or Tymlos, it blunts their effectiveness to a lesser extent compared with other bisphosphonates such as Fosamax.

I take 150mg Risedronate once a month..no pain, no problems

I took it for 5 years, and had slow, steady growth, but still significant osteoporosis. I experienced a pelvic fracture and wrist fracture (Thanks, Labradoodle!) and my doctor then put me on Eventity for 1 year. No side effects from either medication. Now, after the year on Eventity, with significant good results, I'm back on Risedronate, about 4 months in, with no side effects. Good luck to you!

Thank you for your answer. It really is very helpful to know that another person takes what one is taking and has had no problems.

I have taken risedronate once a week for 3 months and have had no side effects. I won’t have a bone density test for another year, so fingers crossed.

Some have responded they have not had BMD improvement after3 years of taking Risedronate but no fractures. No one has said they had side effects.
Some have said , no improvement but that the BMD has stayed the same, that is, no bone loss. That would be good news.
Best wishes
