Has anyone started HRT after the age of 65?
My rheumatologist that specializes in osteoporosis told me that HRT would work too slowly at my age - 67- to increase my bone density. I had a failed 5-year course of Fosamax and will have my last Evenity dose in November. Reclast will follow. Please share your experience with HRT after the age of 65 - when you started it, what type you are taking, side effects, etc. Also include if you feel HRT helped you keep gains from ostoporosis meds. Thanks.

@vtmac My gyno started me when I was well past 20 yrs menopausal and put me on the transdermal patches to avoid any issues with blood clots. When administered this way the estradiol is not processed thru the liver and that avoids the issue with blood clots. I don't have any papers to cite you but my gyno knows what she is talking about. It's also all over social media..this gatekeeping HRT for fears of issues that are largely unfounded is borderline criminal.

Dr. Susan Hardwick-Smith on YouTube!!!!
My doctor put me on BHRT last winter and was ok with me not taking the pharmaceuticals (I am 75 and have osteoporosis). I just got my bone turnover markers back having had a bunch of bloodwork done and am very pleased to share that my bones are building (P1NP is up) and my bone resorption (CTX) has gone down; my calculated score on that is now 169 (150 is the lowest that Dr. Lucas says we should shoot for)!! My previous score was 124. I am not sure yet if it's the BHRT or me being careful with my diet and supplements; my exercise is not dramatic though I walk. I will repeat my REM scan in the spring and will let y'all know how that is. YAY! Gracie7

Fantastic. I am 70. My endocrinologist, rheumatologist and obgyn said no. How are you feeling and what are you taking, specifically???
@tillymack - Yes, my doctor is a functional medical doctor. My rheumatologist has suggested Prolia, but I am avoiding that and hoping BHRT, along with diet, supplements and power plate will do the job. Gracie7
@gracie7 Is this functional medicine doctor one you see online or in person? My neighbor has a similar routine from a functional medicine doctor she sees only online but it is working well. I'm wondering if this setup might work for me too.
@ipg I feel good about what I am taking. I am sleeping unbelievably well now and am not fearful of negative health issues that might come up as a result of the BHRY. I do believe, and my past experience is, that many 'regular' doctors are not always 'up/informed' on recent/up-to-date health 'stuff.' Past issues with HRT were because they were synthetic drugs (horse urine and progestin)...not natural, as bio-identical products are.
Specifically, I am taking estradiol .025 patch and 100mg compounded progesterone.
I believe that if someone has a fear, then it most likely will manifest/come to be. I choose to be confident that it is doing exactly what it is intended to do; but I have always taken care of my health and do monitor myself regularly. gracie7

1 Reaction@tillymack - my functional medical doctor appts are in person. I have only had functional medical doctors in my life, so I do prefer that belief system/training.
