Has anyone not had any treatment after non-invasive tumor removed?

Posted by iborg @iborg, Dec 27, 2025

My urologist said it’s my choice. Either don’t do the 6 week treatment or not. and check bladder in 3 months. Has anyone else not taken treatment and faired well?

Do it - Better safe than sorry! The BCG is not that bad. I've had 1 series of 6 and starting my 4th series of 4. My urologist recommended it, so I'm doing it!

Yes I had the same situation. I elected to have the six BCG instillations and had a clean cystoscopic evaluation afterwards. Bladder tumors have a high rate of reoccurrence and I thought I would take every opportunity to lower the chances of reoccurrence. The data on BCG immunotherapy is very convincing and I didn’t see a good reason for not going forward. The instillation is not a wonderful experience and there are short term side effects but the benefits outweighed the inconvenience, I thought.

I did not have BCG after first TURBT. However, I had a recurrence at my 3 month cystoscopy. I chose to have 6 weeks of BCG after my second TURBT and 2 or 3 more 3 week treatments. I have been tumor free now for 18 months. Situations are different for different people, but I recommend BCG now rather than waiting. Hope you have success in obtaining a bladder clear of tumors whatever route you choose.

@wifey9 I'm in the better safe than sorry camp. 6 years ago I had the bladder cancer, had it removed and went through part of the BCG treatments only to have the availability of BCG dry up. The cancer returned 5 years later. So, the risk of the removal surgery maybe missing some of the errant cells, or whatever cause of the recurrence, is too high to risk. BCG treatments may be uncomfortably, but it beats the alternatives.

I've just received my 4th treatment with the Gem-Doc I wasn't a candidate for the BCG due to CVID. Some of the side effects have increased with every treatment but it's better than the alternative.

Hi daddyroxx2025,
Luckily, I have only had minor problems with the catheter insertion. My urologist had done it the 1st 2 or 3 times
and she was very smooth.
At the start of the treatments, however, she had her assistant do it and she was little rough the 1st time and inserted it too
fast. I asked her during the 2nd treatment to insert it slower and that solved the problem. She recommended that I take a deep breath and hold it until I felt the catheter enter the bladder - that did help! I just kept saying to myself "I don't want cancer"!!! BCG has kept my cystoscopy tests looking good, so I will just accept the discomfort and continue the treatments as long as needed.
I'm quite sure that they wouldn't discontinue your treatments because of your catheter problems - they are professionals and will find an answer! Don't let cancer win!!!
Good luck and let us know how you slayed the beast.

@iborg, whether to do treatment or not is always a hard choice. I hope you saw the various responses you got from several members living with bladder cancer.

So let me see if I completely understand your choice. You have already had surgery to remove the tumor. Pathology showed that the tumor was non-invasive, meaning it was early-stage bladder cancer confined to the bladder's inner lining (urothelium) and hadn't grown into the deeper muscle wall..

Now you are faced with choosing between chemotherapy in the bladder (intravesical chemotherapy) for 6 weeks or to monitor only. Do I have that right so far?

Intravesical chemotherapy (BCG) is typically used to treat cancers that are confined to the lining of the bladder but have a high risk of recurrence or progression to a higher stage. Did your cancer team mention that you are at high risk? Did they outline the pros and cons to treatment vs no further treatment at this time?
