Has anyone invested in "Barefoot shoes"?

Posted by allwheeldrive @allwheeldrive, May 31 12:42am

I have had idiopathic peripheral neuropathy for about 15 years, but I have little to no pain. I have virtually no feeling in my feet other than if I walk on something sharp or hard with my weight eg, even a grain of rice! however, I felt nothing when I tripped on a slate step edge and sliced the bottom of my big toe- the blood alerted me to the injury!!
I have to protect my feet, even inside. (I now have a rubber strip covering my step) However, my balance is rapidly deteriorating and barefoot feels more stable. Podiatrists have given the "Barefoot" shoes
a good review.

I just bought a pair of "zero drop" sneakers from Amazon made by JOOMRA. They are so comfortable and they really make me feel safe secure and letting me see how my whole foot is touching the ground. The box toe is wide and the shoe is soft. I slip right in it because you can open the laces and make it so that it's easy to just slip it on. No tying up. They only cost me $32 a pair and they're amazing. I got two pair. I take an 8 1/2 so I got a nine but the nine was touching my toes to the tip of the shoe..they came right to the edge but I could still walk and be okay but I like thick socks so I got a 9 1/2 and it's even more comfortable and it's even better and I can wear both of them, but I'm very happy! Check them out & not expensive & they do exactly what all the other expensive ones do the art on them is me they came completely white. I'm the one that made the drawings on the Shoe.

@leicia You might try Naot styles with the Koru footbed, which is simply a wider footbed than their other styles. It’s pricey, lined in leather and has close to a zero drop but nice cushioning and a wide toe box. Check out Zappos, which has a free shipping and return policy. If you like to wear socks with your sneakers, the Altra Escalante or any of their other styles are good. I couldn’t wear them because I like to wear without socks and the lining is a rough textile which really irritated my feet. Another brand with good support, cushioning and wide toe box is Alegria. It’s very popular with nurses and others who spend long hours on their feet. The drop is close to zero and most styles have a “rocker” type sole that makes walking much more comfortable for me than totally flat soles.

@leicia you are so welcome! Another you might try is Vionic — I’m not happy with the one sneaker style I just got just because of the color, but it seems to have all the right stuff - wide toe box, very low drop, good cushion but not too much, etc. I’m going to try with this one again.

I’ve gone back and looked in my purchase history, at all the shoe brands I’ve actually ordered, tried and returned in the past year, just looking for something that would let me walk decent distances without pain — 33!! It’s truly a “journey” and thank goodness I can order and return without penalty. Good luck!

Hello!
I tried Barefoot shoes. Although they felt comfortable, they made my back pain much worse. My doctors said stop wearing them, too much like thongs or flip flops. Not enough support for my back. Then my knee’s starting hurting again. So, I quit wearing them and my pain improved. The best I have found for pain relief are Brooks. Not super thick sole, with wide width and wide toe box. They look nice too. Everyone is different and maybe Barefoot will work for you. Just sharing my experience.

I experience similar issues as you do. I notice that the numbness is creeping up my leg and now includes my ankles and part of my calves. I recently purchased Zero Drop shoes made by Whitin on Amazon. They are very comfortable, have some good support and a wider toe box. The price is very reasonable as well.
