Has anyone had spinal anesthesia to remove a pin from your femur?

Posted by merrychristmas @merrychristmas, May 31 7:39am

I had rod and pins put in last June after I fractured my femur . The MD said the pin is loose therefore giving me pain . I was just wondering if any of you had spinal rather than general anesthesia ?

@merrychristmas Is the plan to remove and replace the pin?

When I had a total hip replacement I had spinal anesthesia/epidural. In addition I was sedated with medication delivered IV before the epidural was administered. I was asleep and felt nothing after the sedation was administration and during the surgery. Not general anesthesia. This allowed me to awaken more easily and I would do this same anesthesia routine again.

Anesthesia at Mayo Clinic (scroll down the page for the description of epidural):

What is the plan with your orthopedic surgeon? Is an epidural recommended? I talked with the anesthesiologist prior to my surgery in pre-op who offered epidural vs. general anesthesia and allowed me to decide what I wanted. Does this help to answer your question?

This is helpful. I have an appointment to my to see my MD tommorow that’s when I asked questions . I don’t want General because I have apraxia of speech and my speech got worse after general anesthesia . I don’t want to wait till surgery to talk the Anesthesiologist . If says no I am going get up and out of there.
What drug did they put in your IV

they're good, and as long as you get a good one, yes, epidural over general
