Has anyone had recurrence of RCC after a partial nephrectomy?

My husband had his kidney cancer spread to his liver after a partial nephrectomy …
Discovered the new cancer 6 months after surgery.
He was on the keytruda/lenvima regiment for a while (5to 6 months) and is currently on keytruda every three weeks.
He also had radiation on the liver spots.
He’s is going strong one year in to treatment!
Cancer is shrinking and he’s as sassy as ever!

Thank you for contributing here! May I ask, what was the size of his liver spots, and did the cancer show up again on the kidney that got the partial nephrectomy? How is he doing with side effects? Thank you for any info you can provide!

I’m not sure of the size of the liver cancer… I will let you know.
The cancer in the kidney has not returned… that cancer did spread to his liver. The liver cancer had shrunk due to lenvima/keytruda treatment. It was then obliterated by radiation treatments.
He had to stop the lenvima due to elevated protein levels in his urine.
They “watch” other spots during the scans (every three months). These spots come and go and are attributed to the medications not new cancer. It has been a journey and we learn a little more by asking questions.
As far as side effects… he has some skin issues and itching.
He is very achy especially where he has suffered from arthritis. And tired… which comes and goes. I think he is most tired right after treatment and weirdly enough… the days leading up to treatment.
One thing we are trying to do is wear compression stockings on a regular basis. He has developed some skin cancer (unrelated) and it is adding to the itching.

Thank you very much for the info! I have a newly found small mass on my right kidney that was partially (5%) removed two years ago, and now a 9 mm spot on the liver. I haven’t been able to speak to the doctors about it yet, but it’s good to have read your comments before talking with them. Prayers to you and your medical team. We all need to make the most of every day…. The cancer can slow us down but we keep on enjoying the little things!
Ask lots of questions of the doctors and the internet…
I bet I’ve searched renal cancer, keytruda, side effects, etc fifty times and something new will show up and lead to a new question! I’m not inclined to think “medically” so my interpretation of things is pretty basic and my misspellings are humorous but we get thru!
