Has anyone had multiple ankle surgeries?
I broke my ankle back in March of 2023. When I first went to the ER they could not set it, so the had to preform a surgery to set an exterior fixator while recovering in the hospital they were going to put me in a rehab for my swelling to go down for about a month. My insurance from work only covered preventative so instead they decided to do ankle surgery the next day assuming because my insurance. After recovering from this I was never able to walk without a CAM boot this went on for a little over a year, until my job that was allowing me to work even with my walker until it started to affect my productivity. I lost my job and was forced on medicaid due to not being able to walk well enough to be able to work elsewhere. While I had medicaid I decided I needed to see what I need to get back to walking without assistance from a boot and cane and my surgeon recommended an ankle fusion I agreed. I had the third surgery on my ankle in September 2025 which was done arthriscopiccaly. After my two week check up he noticed that one of the screws had slipped and rushed me back into another surgery a week after my checkup to correct the issue this time he opened me up. I went to the two week check up this time and the screws and hardware looked great which was good news. I got my cast taken off yesterday and noticed I couldn't even make my ankle touch the ground after my new x-rays my surgeon wants to preform another surgery this time up towards the middle of my foot to try to straighten the bones there. Im going on 2 years in March of not being able to walk on my own. Im having a hard time dealing with all the surgeries and my body doesn't feel like it's okay. Is there anyone out there thats been through anything similar? Sorry for the long post and possible punctuation errors

@bostonian71 Yes it’s scary.Are you walking now? I had ankle surgery sept 18,2025. Been three months now and still not walking on my own. I still have pain and swelling even after an hour walking with crutches. Pain wakes me up in the night. PT is a slow process I’m discovering and I don’t feel much difference after 6 weeks going.
I have all the hardware fixing the three broken bones. It’s hard mentally isn’t it? Grateful for my husband being there for me .

2 Reactions@tweet I feel the same way without my wife I would be lost and my last surgery was around October and I can get around with the cam boot ans a cane now but the pain has been unbearable and my dr is taking my pain medication away soon I dread it

2 Reactions@cwagner251 Good wife. They took my pain meds away two weeks after surgery. I was so frustrated and felt it’s unjust. I think it’s going to be a long road. I feel my hardware constant. Dr said “ because I have thin ankles” I ask him when can he take the hardware out. One year. I hope your recovery is fast and you heal real soon. Thankful for our mates! Stay strong. I know it’s not easy at all… Helps hearing from others.

1 ReactionThat’s so sad. I was so worried about my hardware getting loose. So far so good. But it’s been three months and still have pain and can’t walk on my own.
I feel so bad for you. I don’t know how you’re holding up. I hope you have lots of support and care. I can’t imagine going through that for so long and more surgery.Its only been three months for me and have days where I just break down. How are you doing now? Any improvement? 🤗

I go for my next appointment in January and then he said he would schedule my next surgery but wanted me to have less pain that I did have so we will see cause its still the same. I started a work from home job and its helped alot with some financial issues so hopefully I can keep pushing through the pain for that. Ive been more hopeful since starting that

I'm thankful for my youngest 24 son whos been taking care of me 6 month now .
Im still in PT my foot is finally moving since it was stiff. I'm still so worried I still feel stiff some days I feel numbness and tingling on my foot . What a nightmare. I'm still on gabapentin. Also my PT said he's concern of the color of my foot. Looks like poor circulation. 😕

1 Reaction@tweet I never really use the oxy pills only half at night for sleeping and so i would stretch it out. But i would take 800 mg of advils and later a1000mg of Tylenol. Ask your nurse or DR.
Thankfully I don't remember so much pain. But no i cant walk yet im ona walker 6 month now. My foot was stiff.almost 4 month on a splint😑

@bostonian71 yeah I sleep in a recliner still with like 5 pillows propping my foot up it helps but its been almost 2 years since I've slept in a bed
