has anyone had Long Covid, before a diagnosis of MDS?

Husband (61 years old) just diagnosed with high risk MDS, and he has had Long Covid for 5 years (one of the first to get Covid.) I was wondering if anyone else has this....we are having some problems knowing if his fatigue is from LC or from MDS. He has all blood lines and hemoglobin low, just starting chemo. He is definitely spending around half the day in bed, which is a little more than before the MDS diagnosis. We are getting all the MDS treatment he can get, but we are just curious about if anyone else has had Long Covid before MDS.

Hello @kharmer and welcome to Connect. With your husband’s blood numbers being low, especially his hemoglobin, my finger points to MDS as the culprit for his extreme fatigue. Certainly his long covid isn’t helping, but with low hemoglobin there’s not enough red blood cells carrying oxygen throughout his body.
MDS can interfer with the production of healthy blood cells. Depending on the type of MDS there can a proliferation of immature white blood cells called blasts in the marrow and circulating blood. These little guys multiple quickly and start forcing out healthy blood cells. Most likely, that is the cause of the fatigue your husband is feeling. If your husband on chemo treatments that will also diminish his blood counts temporarily. But usually after mid month, when the numbers regenerate he may start feeling a little more perky.

You mentioned your husband just started chemo. When was he diagnosed with MDS? What type of treatment is he taking?
