Has anyone had a positive experience on Boniva?

I have been attempting to avoid using any osteoporosis meds. Due to Lupus I have auto immune hepatitis and also have a low WBC consistently. I’m going back on Budesonide again to hopefully help with both and that the Boniva will help with any negative bone loss caused by the 3mg daily dose of the budesonide.
I’ve tried two other weekly osteoporosis drugs and suffered severe muscle pain and cramping. My rheumatologist’s thinking is a monthly dosage may be easier? Thoughts? I’m very nervous.

I'm on Boniva due osteoporosis and the loss of bone density side effect of my breast cancer drugs.

I have been on Boniva for two years with no side effects.

I was Boniva for 5 years and stopped using due to hip pain,,, that was back in 2014,, I didn’t have any side effects when I was one it and it did help my bone density. I Just started Evenity , only one dose so far, and we’ll see how it goes.

@madison26 Hey Madison,
That’s interesting. Did they connect the hip
Pain to the use of Boniva? Terrific that you had positive bone improvement though.
Did you take a 10+ yr (2014-2026) break from osteoporosis meds then?
I feel so lucky that everyone seems so willing to share their own journeys! You realize pretty quickly that you’re not the only one! Thanks for your response. Best to you.

Hi, the hip pain was never “ diagnosed” as an effect of the boniva, but since I had been on it for 5 years, my PCP said let’s take a break. I started back on Fosomax about 2 years ago and had hard time with esophagus and stomach so I came off that and had been on a holiday since this past month and went on Evenity.

My rheumatologist had me try Fosamax and another weekly one and I developed so much muscle pain and cramping in my legs, feet, torso. So, I went off for a few months. So now Boniva. So far, I’m feeling more confident. I feel like they like you to not take them for too many years. Fingers crossed for sure.
